Funniest/Stupidest comments you have received about your Ferrari

Then there's co-workers who ask how much my car costs. I just give them a figure, I feel like it's super awkward regardless.

Ferrari Owner: "Less than my wife and/or girlfriend(s)."

I think I'll use this one with one variation. My answer will be "less than having children". (I have none)

 

I hear you on that one too. I used to tell people, when they asked how I afforded a Ferrari:

"Because I don't have children. I'm part government program that issues Ferraris as a reward for not having kids."

This usually upset at least a few people...LOL!

(My kids all have all always had fur, four legs, run around naked, and if one gets knocked up, I can legally sell her kids... )

I was a professional cyclist. I raced for a few teams, including Linda McCartney Foods and La Francais de Jeaux, among others, and on the professional Six day circuit. I was a national team member for years, including for the Olympic long team, national champion, three top tens at world championships, blah blah blah.

I never got too offended at people asking how much the car (or anything else) costs because they always seemed genuine. I took the question as if they are trying to figure out if they can wing it for themselves someday.
It's a reasonable question because unless you are a Ferrari enthusiast, you legitimately have no idea how much they are and you wouldn't know that they vary from $30,000 (used) to $2+ million, so how can they be expected to know if it's in their price range.. When they announced the new 488, my first question was "how much is it going to cost?" I never understood the arrogant saying "well, if you have to ask...." That's a bunch of crap, just because I can afford something, it doesn't mean that I would want to pay that much for it. My desire for the item has to be more than the price tag, even if it's a pack of gum. That's how it works for me. I never buy something if the price tag is bigger than my desire to own it.
Don't tell me that you guys never saw something on the road (car, motorcycle, T-Rex, hover craft, plane, boat, or any other toy), and didn't wonder "hey how much does that cost?"
Then decide to buy one if it sounds like it's worth buying.
Of course none of this applies if you can tell that they are asking in a sarcastic way just to bust your chops and not because they genuinely want to know. If the person has a sarcastic tone, I wouldn't even waste my time talking to that person (unless I'm in the mood to screw with them, LOL).

+1 I don't know why people get upset about it.

 

Some might get upset that asking is an invasion of their privacy, they don't want to explain themselves and their finances, or they feel offended that someone should question their prosperity...but THIS pretty much nails the best attitude of helping others achieve the same dream:

How can someone decide if a purchase is "do-able" for themselves if they are clueless of the cost? That's the same reason they might ask, "what do you do for a living?"

When people buy cars and houses the question of how much is common, people want to know what these negotionable items are selling for.

 

Lately I use: " No idea , I'm just a detail guy and I'm taking the car to/from shop", depending on how clean my car is at the moment.

 

"About half of what I can sell it for."

 

The only way to find out the cost is to ask an owner? These people don't have Internet? These people need to be told that it is attainable? These people can't get off their ass and do something for themselves? Did you have to ask someone the cost of a Ferrari before you bought yours?

The way I found out that my dream of owning a Ferrari was attainable is I did my own research and found out for myself that it was possible. Then two months later I owned one. I didn't have to ask anyone how much their Ferrari cost.

 

I've done plenty of research. My latency is going to be considerably longer than two months though.

What concerns me is that 348 prices are steadily increasing and I still haven't got one yet.

I think, as usual, context is important. If it's the first or second question out of their mouth, I give my stock answer - it was a birthday present from my wife, and so it'd be rude to ask, both of which are true. Tonight, coming from a local Porsche event, my wife & I ran into another couple in the parking lot, who first complemented us on our car, then we chatted about my car (he seemed an enthusiast), then their car (John Cooper Works, cool little machine), cars in general, the logistics industry (his occupation, something I've always been curious about), yada yada. So, when he popped the question - so to speak, I didn't really feel as uncomfortable as I usually do. I took out the Cars.com app, and we looked through some comps, talked about options, etc. It was fun. I hope we run into this couple again some day & they're driving a Porsche. But, people who refuse to put in the effort at conversational foreplay, they get the stock answer...T

 

I think this is exactly right. The vast majority of people ask because they want to figure out if they can afford one. They are usually surprised at the sales price, because they think the car is brand new and 300k+, but then I tell them about maintenance costs and they aren't as thrilled. It's not a car someone living paycheck to paycheck should spring for, and it can't be your only reliable form of transportation, because that's just funny.

I always check price. It's not about the money. It's cost/benefit. Everyone has a different threshold of benefit for the cost. I'm also a cash buyer so price is relevant to how much I have liquid.

 

I disagree guys. If someone really wants to buy a Ferrari they don't go ask the owner unless the know him and my friends have never asked. When I was looking at used 458's before I bought my new one , I never asked an owner how much it cost because if I REALLY wanted to know I could do the hard work of lifting up my smart phone and google it. People just want to know your business. I'll answer everything else about the car but how much it costs because I think its tasteless to ask.

Better yet if someone asked me a basic question about my car and I spurted out it costs about $300k I'd be considered a conceited ******.

 

I had the same question several times "how much was it"? I just say about the same price as a house - which is true. The last guy (at a stop light with his girlfriend) responded back SH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!T He was not rude and it did not bother me that he asked.
