That's interesting at the end of the article he mentions 'ZDF' as a 2nd set of VINs available for Ferrari. I'd forgotten that the very end of the 308 GT4 run must have included modern VINs. I thought those came in with the 1980 308 GTBi/GTSi cars, but I guess some GT4s must have had the new serials.

I'll be very interested to see what kind of a modern 'Dino' Ferrari comes up with.

Interesting article. Thanks for posting. I wouldn't have guessed that the 458 revenue was, if I read it correctly, the equivalent of revenue generated by all other models, including the Cali...T

The problem for Ferrari is if they introduce the cheaper Dino it will hurt sales of the bread and butter 2 seat sports cars. Overall "sales" will go up and dealers would be happy, but would profits?

What You think, will the new Dino also be for Racing?

I think the real impact on the 2 seat sports cars will be determined by pent up demand. If the demand overflow goes towards the new Dino, then all is well. However, if there isn't much pent up demand, it would likely eat into the 2 seaters and you'd be right - cannibalism ain't a way to grow profits.

What scares me about a Dino is the strong possibility it will be bought up by prospectors or dealer-coveted collectors, who will hold them hostage for a much higher price. Essentially, flipping them for profit. :(

If Ferrari does introduce a Dino at a great price point, I hope they require both a mandatory 3-year lease and limit sales at one car per year per customer, to keep the prospectors at bay.

Great article .. Imagine if the new Dino has a berlinetta and spider variation and comes with a manual transmission maybe only a manual and pricing say around the price of the california .. I suspect the Ferrari faithful will take 3000 per year.. WOuld be a great addition to the line......

Of course it will have a manual transmission. The Board of Directors will use the new Dino to show that is has listened and will finally deliver a product so that those who left vowing never to return to the marque until a proper manual was produced all flock back. Performance of the new Dino may not be up to Ferrari standard but will be to the standard of those who want the manual transmission. The Dino will herald the start of a new era for Ferrari, that of being more customer focused and giving the customer what they want. The success of the new model with the manual transmission will then filter through all models until a time will arrive that all Ferrari's will be back to being manual transmission only.

Apart from affecting the bread and butter 458, the other the same potential issue is the one Porsche has had with the Boxster/Cayman, namely that they have to hobble its performance to keep it from upstaging the more profitable 911. At the same time, Alfa Romeo occupies that more affordable-but-slower niche for FIAT, and would probably be crushed out of existence by a revived Dino marque (and of course Porsche).

Expert opinion is always interesting but you can form your own opinion from facts, context and experience.
I'm not saying Mike does it, but these days I read a lot of opinions that seem to be framed contentiously just to be heard.
