after winning at Sonoma, please explain to me why kyle busch is not automatically in the chase?
They didn't want non full season teams reaping the chase rewards. They want teams committed to the season to be talked about in the chase. No one shot wonders at a draft track, hence the points requirement and full season, although the second gets waived for approved medical absence. I'm not sure how it splits out now that it is 16 cars, but it was pretty big $$$ to make the chase on the old format. You could pocket the money, and not race the chase as a one shot wonder without these rules.
seems that they would rather try to work danica in to the chase by points than have a true big budget team that has won a race...this is another way nascar is looking like a joke.
Austin is lucky to be alive. that was a horrid incident. I hope the fans are safe as well. I'm sure we will hear more about the condition of those hurt in the stands tomorrow. congrats to yoooonyer!
That was a really bad looking wreck, hitting the fence at that speed and watching the car come to a complete stop in the fence I was also surprised Austin walked away. Flames engine flying thru the air ???? So glad there were only minor injuries.
I'm still trying to figure out why they started the race at 11p and ended it at almost 3a, vs just postponing to the next day. and they're damn lucky that everyone walked away from that...drivers and fans.
What time did the race actually end? 3 a.m.? I sure hope track officials exercised some common sense and didn't launch their mammoth fireworks display at that time. Otherwise, people living within a 2 or 3-mile radius should raise holy hell with city hall and the track. Starting the race at 11 p.m. on a Sunday night is absolutely ridiculous. I ran out of beer and pretzels by midnight!
Here's the NASCAR TV replay. More to the right. Austin Dillon horrific airborne crash & aftermath | NASCAR SPRINT CUP videos | Main gallery | Motorsport.com That's how safe these cars are comment. Yea right. He was just plain lucky he's not dead. And "The fence did it's job". It tore a hole in it as big as the car.
His crash in the first "truck" race at Daytona in 2000 was more horrific. I thought I saw his death on TV.
true. I thought I saw the death of Austin last night too...as well as spectators. that was frightening. by the way, my house in lake norman was Geoff's before I bought it. I still see him driving his old c-5 vette. he is lucky to be alive indeed!!
Wow! What a coincidence, having that kind of connection with Geoff! I just spoke to someone in the newsroom at the Daytona paper, and learned the track did not launch the fireworks, showing some discretion for the area residents.
holy crap, Barton wasn't kidding!!! NASCAR really did have fake wood paneled walls!!! (this is a recreation of Big Bill France's office at the NASCAR Archives museum in Daytona, pic tweeted by Jooonyer) Image Unavailable, Please Login
First I'm seeing this... Let me guess, another debacle of a race punctuated by a three hour rain delay, numerous cautions and the piece di resistance, the "green-white-checker" which gave them their dream finish led by Jr. Jr. Jr. as the rest of the field vanishes in a cloud of smoke behind him. It has become so predictable, it's almost comical. BHW
And Indycarouttamya$$ think pack racing is OK........................Time to put some more turns in them there tracks
Wot? You thought I was joking? All of the offices at the original DIS were a monument to the fake wood panel wall industry. BHW
If you look at the video, this guy is darned lucky. The car it the fence straight on the bottom. If it were his side, the catch fence would have torn it to pieces.
Between NASCAR and Crapwagon......sooner or later one of these things is going into the stands and the aftermath is going to be very very bad. When do these people wake up and face the fact that it isn't working at any level????
there were fans killed by debris at an IRL race in Charlotte and a CART race at Michigan back in the late 90's. IIRC they were both due to wheels/tires getting into the stands.
I remember. But when a 3900 pound stock car or 1300 pound Indy Car goes into the stands and not only do fans get killed but a child gets hurt or worse....the lawyers will circle like sharks to blood in the water. People understand that things happen, but I do think they feel they are safe from an entire automobile. Little do they know... Does one remember how high Dan Welon's car got in the air before getting caught in the catch fence?
You guys are not identifying the true culprit who controlled the race being ran late instead of postponed. That was NBC because they had so much invested in this that viewership even late on Sunday night would be better than a 11am race on Monday. Even then NBC might not be able to broadcast it and it gets moved to even a lesser station. If this were FOX they might would have thrown in the towel at 9pm. But it was NBC's big return. NBC also dictated at PM race on Sunday instead of the traditional Saturday on the 4th weekend. That said, I also believe the networks have a bigger role in the success or decline of racing in general. Look at Indy, Tudor, F1 coverage we have. The networks do what they want and we have to live with it.
Read somewhere yesterday that NBC was touting "big numbers" with regard to the viewership of the Daytonner Debacle, excuse me 400. Are we to believe that people stayed up past 11:00 to see the start of the race and remained up until nearly 3:00AM to see the whole thing? Doubtful. There may have been some decent west coast numbers, but beyond that, hard to believe anyone was watching much past the start of the green flag in the east. BHW
0.8 disputed, but if that's true, it's IndyCar ratings! someone at NBC is probably drinking Maalox from a 55 gallon drum. TV Ratings Sunday: Women?s World Cup Scores Record High; ?Big Brother?, ?Celebrity Family Feud? & ?BattleBots? Fall - Ratings | TVbytheNumbers.Zap2it.com
I was at the charlotte race when John Paul jr's car hit the turn 4 wall hard and sent a tire into the stands. I was in the Husqvarna suite literally above where the impact occurred. I remember well that people were saying, "I hope no one is hurt." to that I said, "a tire coming into the stands is like a meteor crashing...more like how many people are killed." that was a sad night.
