Italia chasing a speciale

 

Your Italia keeps up with the Speciale very well! I would have thought that a Speciale would be running away from you, but it's not!!

 

Who's driving what makes a big difference.

 

I was driving the Italia equiped with a set of very old Hooiser R6, which were completely gone after the hot pursuit. Steel belt were exposed to nake eyes on both front tires.

Italia:

Fabspeed Headers and cats
AK muffler
ECU tune
Sabelt GT130 bucket seats
Giro Steel rotors
pagid yellow pads
3/4 tank gas
R6 with 12 heat cycles

Speciale:

Fully stock
90% new cup2 tires
half tank gas

Both cars had a passenger, The driver in that Speciale is a pro driver used to race Endurance,Challenge and Renault Fomular. He said he gave everything he got and very much surperised by my speed. I could have driven a bit harder but I did not since all of us want to go home in one piece With current setup, I feel my car has a tiny bit advantage on top end power as shown in the video I was closing in at the end of straight line.

I was amazed by the steering response after I drove my friend's speciale. The rear end could be very happy if you push a bit more. Down shift is not as smooth as Italia, but overall shift speeds are very similar, maybe Speciale is slightly faster in that aspect. It was great fun on that day.

 

That's an awesome track with long straights for maxi speed. The S is not that much faster than the Italia...the evidence keeps building.

If Stock vs Stock, I believe I would have no chance to stay all the way with Speciale. The most successful modification I have done on my Italia, my personal opinion, are those Giro steel rotors and Pagid brake pads. A set of these rotors are about 38lbs heavier than stock CCB but it got canceled out by the lightness of full exhaust package from Fabspeed and AK. These rotors and pads warm up quicker, generate better pedal feel and excellent stopping performance.

 

I have just come back from the Pilota Avanzato course on Varano near Parma. I timed my video runs (on iMovie) and found the runs where I had telemetry data provided by the instructors were identical to the length in iMovie. Therefore, I can assume the other runs to be accurate too.

The Speciale in sport mode is no faster around a track than the 458 in race mode. We did not use the Speciale in race but I reckon that would have been something like a second quicker. There was around 10s difference between all the drivers though!!

The track is very tight and technical, a good 'amateur' lap is in the 1:20 to 1:22 range in a 458. The F12 was much slower there, I was about 2s off my own pace in a 458.

 

I think the "Pro" in the Speciale is not as good as the top ones or he is intentionally not pushing very hard. If he was a skilled pro driver in that Speciale you would never see that guy on the track let alone catch him. My instructor (pro-racer and coach in Kessel Racing) was almost 4 sec faster than the best Italia times driven by very good amateurs with race experience on Istanbul Park track. According to him with equal drivers Speciale is almost 2 sec faster than Italias on normal tracks

 

2s better than Italia? That's really bad considering that the Speciale has cup tires

 

2sec gap on a 5-6km long track is a huge difference between similar cars

 

I've done a couple thousand laps around Sebring and would kill for 2 seconds.

 

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I think its not just your brakes and tires but also the more open exhaust + tune. You are likely making about the same power. As you said you also have the lighter exhaust system and also some of the weight difference in the two cars is the seats. Since you are both running the racing seats you have closed the gap.

 

Great video....not sure I would want someone texting or on their phone next to me while driving at speed...that phone could hurt pretty badly if it hit you in an incident of slipped out....

So strange our society, nothing is interesting enough to keep the attention away from a gadget anymore...

 

Only if they are similar. The tires alone would account for those 2 seconds. What then do we think of all the lightening, aero, software, and additional horse power? Do they amount to nothing?

 

I was talking about Stock Speciale vs Stock Italia. 2 sec. was a general claim. It may be more or less depending on the track and on many other factors such as driver weight, air temp, fuel level, tires pressures etc, etc... All things being equal Speciale is always faster than an Italia on track

 

Yes, the question is how much faster? I am curious myself. If it's a case of 2 seconds difference between an Italia and a Speciale, then Ferrari would have failed misearably with the Speciale.

 

You don't seem to realise that 2 seconds is a big gap. Taking an Italia and making it 2 secs quicker is a huge task.

 

As I said 2 sec difference is very subjective. What were you expecting so the Speciale is very successful over Italia, 4-5 sec? Anyone that tracks or races knows that 2 sec difference is a BIG margin. So for many including me it is a big improvement over Italia. After all it has got only 30-40 hp more. Biggest difference comes from gearbox, suspension, lightweight and aero.

 

Are u saying that cup 2 tires dun amt to 2 seconds?
