Or maybe she is a plant spying on Williams and reporting any development to hubby at Mercedes?

?? Please define what you mean by "engineer"?

As of right now, AFAIK, you *must* be a true constructor in F1 - Hence why all have massive autoclaves and machine shops etc.

I'm not sure how Haas is getting round that, but apparently they're all happy with him having his tub at least done by Dallara. I guess Haas designs it, then Dallara build it? Fer sure, the team must at least own the IP - Remember the Cans using "Red Bull Technology" to supply both teams a while back? "They" soon put a stop to that little workround.......

There are then numerous "sub-assemblies" that you can out-source ('boxes & brakes etc being good examples), but the team remains responsible for "engineering" the car I believe.

    Cheers,
    Ian

In my book, and I may be wrong, engineer means designing and owning the intellectual properties.

In the case of Ferrari, they do engine, chassis, probably gearbox and most of the ancilaries and components on the car - as far as I know. No, not the plugs !!

They have done that for decades, apart a few chassis designed and built in UK in the 70s. Remember the Thompson chassis, or Barnard's GTO design office?

As far as I know, since BRM packed up, Ferrari are the only one to do everything under one roof. Am I wrong?

    +1

As I noted, "they" put a stop to Red Bull Technology generating the IP for both of the Cans teams; Each must own it's own IP.

    :)

Or the brakes, ECU, most of the hydraulics, radiators, the telemetry and on & on. BUT, how they string all those together remains their problem. Then they have to "package" the whole mess. They all remain large engineering operations IMO.

Sure. But that was just down to them wanting him so badly they let him do his thing out of, IIRC, Guildford. The "engineering" (building the sucker) was all still done in Maranello I believe.

No, I think that's true. Not even Merc are "under one roof" - The car factory is distinct from the PU factory.

But, for many, many years, everyone outside them simply bought a DFV & a Hewland then designed & built their own car. Still an "engineering" exercise.

    Cheers,
    Ian

    According to "reports from Italy"
    ---------------------------------

It looks like it is only a matter of time before Ferrari confirm they have signed Valtteri Bottas with a report from Italy claiming they have reached an agreement with Williams.

Speculation has been rife in recent weeks that the Prancing Horse will not extend Kimi Raikkonen's contract into 2016 and the names of Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo from Red Bull and Force India's Nico Hulkenberg have all been mentioned.

Bottas' manager Didier Coton has previously admitted that his client only has an option with Williams for 2016 and the Grove-based squad were keen to hold onto him.

However, if reports are to be believed then Bottas will continue his racing career at Maranello next season as Corriere dello Sport has revealed that Ferrari have "reached an agreement with Williams".

The paper adds that the Scuderia paid "nearly €12 million" to get Williams to release him from his contract while they have decided to "drop the option to keep Raikkonen", which only expires on 31 July.

Both parties, though, won't make an announcement before the 31 July date and the agreement will set off a "domino effect involving at least four teams".

Hulk missed out at his shot at a big boy seat? again?

I stand corrected! I'm pretty sure you're correct. Thanks.

Although, very vague bells are ringing that they used someone else's 'box for a while? (Williams?) - Didn't Sir Frank have *the* go to 'box for a time?

Not sure about nowadays, but I remain pretty convinced you've got to do your own "engineering" one way or another.

The main thing that separates it from most other forms of the sport IMO; You've still gotta design & build most of the damn thing yerself! ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

So Ferrari replaces a driver with a girls name with another driver with a girls name: Kimi -> Valerie. This should motivate Seb. Nobody wants to lose to a girl! :D

I was hoping for Hulk, but Bottas is a good choice too. This must mean Kimi is retiring? Unfortunate, I liked him but he hasn't performed as well as I thought he could have.

    That's pretty funny.

Time to stock up (more) on Kimi Ferrari stuff.

Bottas has an impressive resume. I don't think he's missing anything; he's just Finnish...they keep the killer instinct buried deep inside.

Who did better than Vettel will this year and a million miles better than Kimi did since his lucky win in 2007.

Cr@p on Alonso as much as you like but he did very well against the considerably better RedBull cars for Ferrari. Unlike Kimi, he actually tried every single time he got in the car!

I thought that may be a little harsh..... So, I checked.

Test Times: Red Bull Ring 24-06 - Pitpass.com

The times from the last test. So, I went & checked the prior Barcelona times.

    You're right, she sucks!

SuperSofts vs Softs though...any times with same tires and same car?

While that's undoubtedly true, who do you think they'd follow to the end of the world - JT or Michael?

    Also very true.

Rory Byrne; "I will never forget a moment during testing about 15 years ago, when you were testing the new car on a cold January day. Towards evening with light fading, you were stationary at the start of the straight at Fiorano waiting to perform one last series of tests. We were waiting for some software update to be installed and everyone was fully focused on making sure that the test preparation was perfect when I heard you speak over the radio “Can someone bring jackets for the mechanics that are here with the car, they’re getting cold.”

    The GOAT.

So, we are going to have a great team of drivers. I just hope the car will be great too otherwise it will be pointless and frustrating again.
