I'm lucky in that I don't have a traditional wrk schedule so I'm able to live anywhere within the Houston area thats within reason. I love the ocean, any ocean, and feel like it'd be fun to do. Life long Houstonian as well so pretty versed with the place other than pricing on the island. Anything worth looking at that yall know of?
Yes, for years......the issue is the housing is stratified......old cheap places, residential in the middle of the island, and then high end high rise or beachfront stuff at both ends of the sand bar! In winter it's slower than molasses, and "the Islanders" are rather standoff ish.... I worked at UTMB, so the WERE the nurses!!! For my money, Clear Lake, around Lakewood Yacht Club, would be better, the best of both worlds. Send a PM for my number, I grew up in Texas City, which is also on the Bay....mostly blue collar town.
I'm in Seabrook with a family beach house in Galveston. Lived in Seabrook since 1986. It would be hard for me not to be by the water that's why it would be hard to ever leave this place. We have the lake/bay, Kemah, NASA, Golf Course in Clear Lake, multi million dollar houses, 150000 dollar houses, Lakewood yacht club, more boats than you could ever want to see, bars, hotels, fresh seafood straight off the boat in Seabrook, you get the idea. Let me know if you want a tour or to meet for beers. Mat
I was just out yesterday by Endeavor Marina blasting around back and forth to the Hilton and back.....I think I would love living there but my businesses are all in The Woodlands area so that keeps me here. Mostly in Conroe when I want to go boating
I LOVE Galveston!! When I moved to Texas in 1992 from California we went down to Galveston to check it out. I was shocked to find beach houses for 30k coming from California. Galveston reminds me of the old California Beach towns in the 1960's, kind of rough around the edges but lots of charm. We go every summer for a week, even now that I live in Colorado. This year we spent a week in Pismo Beach California and the kids still prefer Galveston's warm water and boardwalk atmosphere so we will be heading to Galveston in August. I was surprised that most Texans hate Galveston saying its dumpy or the water dirty (its actually not dirty just the sand is dark instead of white causing the water to look brown). If you want a sterile beach with high rise condos and chain restaurants everywhere Galveston is probably not for you, but if you like old buildings with charm, surf shops, and local bars etc. you will love it. We still consider buying a condo or small beach house in Galveston but just haven't pulled the trigger yet. So in a nut shell, go check it out.. also great offshore fishing for cheap !
Well, Hurricane Ike did clean up a lot of the slummiest parts of the island - by total destruction! Went down there last in 2011, wasn't as bad as I remember it when I lived there in 1998-99.
I am headed to Bolivar with the Ducati this weekend.... Apparently it's a 6000 sq. ft. house, with an elevator...my buddy said in the middle of dinner the hostess screamed in terror. Her diamond was missing from her ring. They went down to the Auto Parts store, and luckily found the 3 carat rock, loose in the gravel of the parking lot. I am going for loose women, I could care less about loose rocks... We had an ancient thread here, about picking up young girls, on the Bolivar Ferry. So long ago, it's in the archived software I would imagine....
I dont know what it is about Galveston and hurricanes but they get some wicked ones; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1900_Galveston_hurricane IMO the worst ever to hit the states. Another in 1915.
Well, it was a wonderful $600K house, waterfront to the Intercoastal, in a gated development of $600K houses..... Crazy to put that level of investment out there, IMO...but I guess some people do! Mosquitoes were terrible after dark, and we loaded out a $100K boat, non running that had been unused for several years. That's another person's world, to me.
1900 was bad because of the lack of warning...read "Issac's Storm" But yes, that's why Houston is a Port, 30 miles inland. I* will have to put my Beach Report in the Confederate Flag thread, at one stretch I counted sixteen in a row, before I saw another Texas or Pirate flag...not too many rainbow ones...LOL A Peace Sign, one of those.
