Take In The Glory That Is The Autobahn! ? CarBuzz
Guys, this thread is redundant. The event was discussed on the 458 Italia/488 forum over 2 weeks ago (July 11). The 488 GTB was driven by an Fchat member who posted the video and hosted an extensive discussion on the topic. BTW, it was a test drive.
I own a 458 and am interested in upgrading to the 488. I am meeting with my local Ferrari dealer in 2 weeks to discuss it. I think that we all need to wait and see what the performance fro Road & Track, Car and Driver and Motor Trend come up with. I think we will all be pleasantly surprised by the results and will fall in love with it. This is Ferrari and they have an EGO as big as anyone and they don't like to hear that McLaren this and Huracan this and that. I personally heard the 488 engine revving two weeks ago and it sounded good to me. I don't like losing the extra 1,000 to 8,000 max RPM. I believe most of you who can afford a new 488 will fall in love with it. Once the new Tesla ludicrous speed comes out and can beat your 458, you will be running to your dealer looking for a 488 or a 650S.
Obviously with 100 hp more, the 488 will outperform the 458 in most applications...Tesla acceleration ? Who cares....I guess some do. I don't. With 488, the soul of hi rev NA Ferrari motor is sucked through the turbines and spit out with uninspired sound and throttle feel compared to the 458. That's what turbos do. Let's not delude ourselves and drink the greenie kool-aid.
Novitec or some tuner will put a turbo on the 458 (if they already haven't done so). So you'd have a 4.5 L V8 turbo vs a 3.9 L 488. Put that in your pipe and smoke it turbo fans.
Those darn pesky owners of a Tesla think they are all that. I've ONLY had Tesla owners who want to race me. One of a business lady with a friend in the car! Annoying! But I never want to lose to a Tesla and have them go home and tell everyone that they beat a Ferarri.
Ferrari needs an optional side ways firing EMP gun to take car of those pesky Tesla owners. I imagine insane mode shortens your driving range considerably. The Tesla won't last for long on repeated hi acceleration bursts...lol
Are you kidding? Why would I care if a stupid Tesla would beat me in straight line? Is it even comparable for an electric car to a Ferrari? Who gives a damn about how fast a car goes from 0-60. The 458 is plenty fast and sounds awesome. I don't quite get why people are so fanatic about 0-60 times and who can beat who, how many HP a car has. Get over it, a Tesla with ludricrous mode will be faster than a 488. I hear it goes 0-60 in 2.8s. Do I care? NO!!!
Wouldn't they have done it a long time ago, when the other large exotic tuning houses did it? There's nothing new about turbocharging a 458, and the limit seems to be around 750 hp.
Saying your Tesla accelerates faster than a 458 is a bit like saying your Miata is faster accelerating than a Mustang. It may be, but it's a bit embarrassing to bring it up.
And let's not forget the most important issue... ahem... the cor-ners I had a pretty beefy AMG on my tail on one of my favorite twisty back roads the other day. He had followed me off the highway. He could "sort of" keep up in the straights because I'm not willing to go over a set speed on anything but a track.... but the best part was entering the corner... I hardly lifted and he's like "Whaaaaa??? Which way did he go... which way did he go?" Never fails to amuse. I also had a Tesla blast past my daily driver on the highway the other day and it was startling to realize it was a Tesla... but hey, come on over to the curvy side of the road and we'll see what's up baby!
The supercharger (Eaton TVS1900) didn't seem to hurt my little 3.0L NSX too much (hp or RPM). 564 is at the wheels, a stock 458 is probably around 450 at the wheels. If I incorporated this or the TVS2300 to my 458 I can safely say it would easily outperform the 488 and sound incredible. Image Unavailable, Please Login
You're absolutely right. Because they're not drivers... not really. They're thrill seekers who want the big huge rubber band to fling them up into the air like in Las Vegas and that's it. Or they're collectors who just "like to watch", which is fine. I have no issue with that. But I tend to like the posts I see here because it's obvious that there are a lot of "drivers" present who like to experience the whole enchilada. I was lucky enough about 10 years ago to drive some circa 1960's Ferrari's that a collector owned and let me tell you, between the smell of the exhaust, the mellifluous sound, the direct connection with the road and the controls and the willingness for those puppies to oversteer, there wasn't a dull moment. Absolute acceleration? Not part of the fun equation. It was the whole package that thrilled. With Ferrari, you get an entire package, the entire range of sensations, not just in a straight line, but in the corners, AND the sounds, AND the good looks, AND the feel of the seats AND the airiness of the cockpit. If one of those starts to go south I don't think it's an "oh well" moment... I think it's going backwards in regards to the whole package. And this discussion about "getting passed on track day"... anyone saying that I might be somehow dissed if my 458S is not faster than your 488 on a track should get into a real race car... take some lessons, then let's go out and we'll see who's top dog. It's missing the point entirely. Bragging rites are what bullies do in the playground because they suck at what they're bragging about.
With this train of thought it sounds like you would like Ferrari to start building 308's again! But I then see that you have a Speciale so it seems you do like the latest and greatest [and fastest]....oh and by the way I am a pretty accomplished racer myself
There are a lot of Teslas around where I live. A relatively high percentage of them have driven stupidly around me when I'm out in a Ferrari. Typically this happens on the freeway. They come onto my six and tailgate, then draw around me and sometimes cut me off, trying to draw a reaction. Never give in. They're the idiots. They sometimes zoom off from stop lights, too, but they're easier to ignore then because they can't sit there and rev their engines while the light is red! As for the 488, it may be fun. Will have to see what they really are like.
You know what accelerates even faster than a Tesla? Elon Musk sucking up your tax dollars (and regs) to prop up his business.
