Engine Job

I have decided to do a valve job on my 1997 355. Change of valves and guides and whatever needs to be changed once opened up. Where to buy parts. Very big difference in price between superperformance and ricambi. Any advice on this would be appreciated.

I'd say it would depend on your country of origin, Hameed. Prices vary according to local taxes, import duties and postage/handling costs. My initial impression of Ricambi (US) is that their basic prices are cheaper, but their postage and handling costs to my country sometimes double the final cost (of smaller parts)

There is a good chance (unlike an american V8) that most of the stuff inside is still perfectly serviceable (excepting the valve guides.)

When I did mine a couple three years ago, we salvaged the valves, pistons, valve springs but had to replace all of the cylinders, guides, chains, tensioners, bearings,...

So, wait until its opened up before deciding what to buy.

 

He said he decided to do a valve job, so I assume he did a leak down test and the results were ****.

 

Maybe or he could have just been reading up on F chat and realized he HAD to. NOW!

check the oil pump chain and tensioner!

 

Car would freeze at 2500 rpm. Couldn't accelerate. Don't remember the readings but a couple of cylinders were very low in a pressure test. Plus too much smoke coming out. Plus a rattling noise. Thought I would bite the bullet and open up. Waited for about 6 months to get the $$$ in order before my mechanic opened up. First results out today. Burnt valves. One cylinder was not working at all. That was on one side. Will wait for more results tomorrow.

SuperperformanceUK GBP 29 EACH

Such a big difference. Obviously at 16 nos. the difference in price in significant. Similar differences in intake valves as well as guides.

I have to say superperformace is not selling the steel guides. Hes selling a Modern acceptable guide to replace the poorly made ones. This is where I found it hard to source off of the steel valve guides No one was carrying all of them when I was shopping.

they were around $35 each back then. I assume the 338 each from Ricambi is because his stock is low or he is out? you would have to ask him but the price has gone up in the last couple years. No way Id pay that much for each guide.

13K go on ebay and buy a used motor for less than half that. Might get lucky and the heads are good on it!

 

The price I have mentioned is for the valves not the guides. The guides are 15GBP. The price difference on the valves is simply too high.

 

I am not paying $338 per valve times 40 valves. No effing way, no how, no where. $13.5K for vaves? Nuts

Yep but ask them.what they are selling don't just go by the part number and think its a ferrari part.
