512TR Gearbox problem.

The postman delivered my Forza Components diff yesterday. It looks as good as it gets. Very nice piece of work. Now it is up to the other parts for completion.
To hear again about another failliure makes me confident that the TR and the 512 TR and the 512 M have a clear issue that first needs to be attended. And yes, you're reading right, my friends 512 M in Italy had even a diff problem with his car but replaced it with a OEM.
I think these cars are beautiful and can be enjoyed in their range of potential when basically equiped with a proper diff. So, don't wait for the bad vibe strucks you. I was in luck with only (!) a broken diff and a broken main shaft as a result. I could easily be confronted with some nasty cracks in my gearbox housing.
I feel that a better diff is no guarantee for other gearbox parts to parrish. But for normal intended use this is no special issue of concern in my opinion because every car that is going to be used on track or abused, will have failliure. Am I right?

Hi Mel,

I asked Phil about these bearings. he said that dimensions are equal so the new ones allready ordered are just fine to match the diff. Rest is at the gearbox specialist too.
So everything is ok in this perspective.

After my purchase of the diff my next challenge was finding a second speed gear set.
The smallest gear of the two had lost much of its hardened surface and needed replacement.
In Italy I found a fine used set for Eu 2250,- . This is just Eu 400,- less than a new set from Eurospares. For me an easy choice. I ordered the set in the UK of wich I can be sure that it is matching and the quality will be better.
Together with the main shaft, new bearings, shims etc this week everything should be considered as gathered. Then, at last, it all can be put together again.
I enclosed pics of the new diff, the old second gear with the wearing signs on it and the new second gear set.

Just wanted to say that I hate the differential on the 512 TR. 6 hours ago I busted it for the second time. And the first owner before me had it done 1 time. So 3. times overall for my 1993 model 512 TR. First time must have been around 40 000 km. The next around 55 000 km and now at 85 000 km.
I have sent Forzacomponents an email.
Just hope the rest of the gearbox is OK...

 

Janrb17, what broke? Did you do the upgrade?

 

may be the 2 times before they put in an "original" diff?

 

Sounds like thats exactly what they did Romano.
From memory I believe Melvok had the same in his 512TR a few years back.

Is the chim and bearing set offer new on the forza website?

 

At the time i made the upgrade i didn't saw the new bearings but my bearings were like new, so no problem.

But i remember that it was a little bit work to fit the diff excactly and perhaps the new shim set is a strong buy for other who plan the upgrade.

 

Yes, although my bearings were fine, a change would been wise.

But i think they will not give me problems.

 

The car has not been taken apart yet. Will be repaired in the autumn/ winter.
I am not an expert on cars, but I have been thinking a bit more about "my case": when the gearlever is in the middle ( free/ no gear) - the rear wheels lock up after 2 meters when pushing the car by hand. And when I tried to drive it directly after the incident, it did go 20 cm forwards before "klunk!" and "slipped". Like it was missing a few teeth.
So I think it can be either pinion, crown wheel or the diff pack itself. Maybe the diff-pack is ok?? ( when I rotate the one wheel, the other follows in the same direction - is that evidence that the diff pack is broken??).
But anyway it will be a huge repair. And my question is now; do I install something else this time? The diff is OK - I will use the Forza-diff if its still available. But what about pinion and crown wheel?? Are they being made by someone other than ferrari also?

 

Where you with us in Nordic F-club meeting this year?

 

I am using a local but experienced ferrari/lambo-repairshop ( Autocura.se). The last time I used a german repairshop ( bpr-racing.de). The guy who did it then was very good and had worked on ferraris since the 1960. And the first time the diff broke it had been installed by ferrari ( at the factory when new). So I guess even if its correctly installed it may brake.

 

Jan, what Mel want to explain is that for a perfect diff install there are not many shops around who can work out that.

Gearbox is really a very special part!

 

Yes, Christian I understand that. Maybe the first repair back in 2004 was done badly ( licenced Ferraridealer in Switzerland) because som oil canals had been clogged with gearboxsealent when sealing the gearbox. But the second repair was by a renowned Ferrari-Wizard in Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart. And the first time the diff was installed was by Ferrari in Maranello. It has broken every time.
I drive the car quite hard, but I don`t abuse it ( I did do a couple of donuts a few years back, but never gonna do that again). Typically I give full throttle in every gear at least 10 times every hour of driving. Maybe the car just isn`t up for it....
