Can't compare the economic period which coincided with the end of the 599 production to today. The GTO was launched in the height of the global financial crisis. It's all relative.

Ofcourse not; "Omologato" is only necessary to enter a specific racing class, too meet the rules dictated by that specifc class. When a specific racing class demands that an x number of derived cars for street use are made and sold, or that the racing car can only use specific parts that are the same as the car that the race car is based upon. In the latter example a manufacturer can "circumvent" the rules by making a more extreme version of that car just to be able to use those same parts in racing.

But none of that is applicable for the 599 (GTO) since it never raced (other than in Ferrari's own 599 FXX program).

I also posted on the F12 VS value thread that I heard from someone who attended the preview two weeks ago that the production number is 599 units.

It also seems that there are so many design aspects paying homage to the 275 GTB Competizione Speciales which followed the original GTO (and the fact that it followed the GTO), to dismiss Competizione Speciale as a probable name, from the fuel filler to the rear hatch spoiler to the slats on the rear wheel arches. Even the wheels seem like a modern equivalent.

Lot of logic and good name except abreviated to CS as in 360 so maybe just Competitzione as others have suggested

The 275 above was not called Speciale originally just Competizione. The Speciale tag has been added in modern times to distinguish the 3 highly modified (effectively silhouette cars) made in 1965 from the later 275GTB/C cars that more closely reflected the road going GTB

Would it be sacrilege to comment that the modern car looks better, to me, than the 275? (At least in these side by side pictures)

All accurate. It is also acknowledged that the F12 itself defines the end of the epoch for Ferrari's iconic front engine V12s as it is will always be the last designed by Pininfarina whose business relationship between Enzo and Sergio started in 1951. The new F12 design is more of a Speciale approach to what many believe is the most beautiful modern front engine design. A complete collection would have both the F12 and the F12 VS.

Well I have a 275 and if I can, I will buy a VS. I happen to think that the 275 gtb is the most beautiful car ever made and if some think the VS is that beautiful then that's fantastic. The better the new cars are, the more they honor the great cars that came before.

Like the others have said, to each his own, but the simple answer is yes.

Agree completely, and I adore the 275GTB (and 250 SWB, Daytona, 250 California SWB, 330 GTC, and others too.).

It's just in that comparison, side-by-side picture of the rear 3/4 views of yellow "VS" and 275 (post #1554 if people are wondering what I am referring to)...the VS looks like a much nicer cleaner design. (All those slats on the 275 look overdone, and I suspect if that many were on the VS people would be cringing.)

If those two cars were released today, sitting next to each other, same price (same long term value-for the sake or argument), and you could pick which keys to grab...I think I'd go with the VS.

I would probably choose the VS too. But for a 50 year old car to even be in a contest with the latest car from arguably the hottest car manufacturer on the planet highlights how incredible the 275 was. The car comes from a time where family cars were boxes with 40 hp. It was so far ahead of its time in every way.

The real test isn't whether you would rather have a 50 year old design or the newest shiniest car fresh from the factory. Its whether you still would want that new car in 50 years time.

Plenty still want a 275. That speaks volumes about the car's brilliance. The VS is still to prove any longevity. It will be fascinating to see if it will have any.

Kind of ironic, considering that the 275 GTBC Pinninfarina body started off life being rejected by Enzo and hidden away in storage.

Given its blistering performance, I'm sure he would want to go race it. A definite source of pride.

Would guess that even if there is no interest in any 50 year old cars in 50 years time, that Victoria's Secret may still have some longevity.
