Made it back to KC today in one piece! What a great 18 day trip with my son and the 612. The car did really well. Absolutely no hiccups with the engine, suspension, steering, driveline and brakes. I've got the airbag light that comes on intermittently to deal with and the fuel gauge issue to resolve. Aside from that, the car performed flawlessly. I couldn't be happier. We put a total of 4,700 miles on the car on this pilgrimage. That puts me at about 5,500 since the rebuild, so it looks like my engine work was done well. No tickets either! Two close calls but the pre-existing K40 system got the job done well enough (even though I realize it is a bit antiquated now). I will post some pics as I do the fuel tank work and remedy the remaining electrical gremlins for posterity. Thanks as always for your interest in the car, the project, and our break-in journey! I think the best part was the 18 days I got to spend 1-1 with my oldest son. We left KC as traveling companions and returned as very close friends having covered a lot of miles, conversations about life, pot-holes along the way, and meeting many friends and family. I couldn't be more thankful for the experience. And yes, the car certainly added a great deal to the adventure, fun and conversations with many along the way. Attached is the last picture I took for the trip along our return from Chicago to KC today. We would stop along the highways or rest areas to throw the baseball around and get our blood flowing before putting a few more hours on the 612. Will all make for great memories... - Jason Image Unavailable, Please Login
I just noticed the "FF" sign in the picture I posted. I wonder if the Ferrari gods are trying to tell me something about what my next car should be?!
This thread would have been a great vicarious experience even if all that happened was the car ended up perfectly sorted. The road trip and resulting adventure with your son is a wonderful story and, as you well know, an experience with value that cannot be measured in dollars. I can only hope to have as great of a journey with my own son one day. Bravo!
Thanks all! Next road trip I will head to the west coast and visit any interested parties in that direction (as I don't have many friends or family in that direction and need to make more).
I just noticed my front grill is missing one of the inserts that contains the chrome/metal piece. Has anyone had this happen to their cars? Any suggestions on how to remedy without buying a whole new grill? I will thinking about a 1/8" stainless rod and trying to glue it in place but thought I ask for other ideas? Yes, it happened to me once when I was using a blower to dry the car. Fortunately I saw the piece fly off so I was able to recover it and put it back on. Needless to say I hand dry that area with a micro fiber towel now. I'm wondering if a 3D printer can produce that small piece.
So glad to see this car up and running. You have taught me a valuable lesson. What not to do to get a Ferrari. LOL
That hurts! ;-) Yes, probably a once in a lifetime undertaking. Fortunately I had a a lot of time to dedicate to it this past year so it filled a nice "purpose" void. Allowed me to get my mind around exactly what I want to be doing next as I turn my career from a corporate exec to an entrepreneur. So, in that way, the project very much inspired me and provided much therapy!
Yep. Common issue. Quite sure that you have to buy an entirely new grill (little chrome pieces aren't available from Ferrari). I got a factory black 612 grill to replace the old chrome one so that I don't have to worry about it anymore.
What will it be the look of the grill once you remove all the chrome bits? Will it become a black grill or it will look like it misses something? 612
Mine is missing a couple too. Not worth it replacing the whole grill. But I would totally but the individual part if someone makes it, same as someone who should reboot the plate clips business...
trygve, here's a pic. It ran about $750 IIRC. Got it on eBay. Was brand new and in the box. Image Unavailable, Please Login
It is a "Norge" sticker I put on the car about 20 years ago. I'm Norwegian so I guess I must have been feeling rather proud that day!
Lots of trial and error, but I finally crafted replacements using varying gauges of hollow aluminum tubes, crushing one edge on a bench vice and polishing the other. Cut to length and installed with a small amount of epoxy. 4 of the inserts in this picture are replaced can you tell? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wow, that's awesome! I bought some 1/8" stainless rod and will cut it to size and see if I can find a way to attach it! I will report back... Also, I failed to mention that the first start up back in my garage after the 4,700 mile roadtrip was loud! The belts loosened enough to start squealing! Will need to go back in, change the oil, and tighten my belts up. Glad it didn't happen along the way!
