I've changed countless alternators in the past, but I have no idea how you guys are removing that top bolt. I can get to it from the back side, it looks to just be a lock nut, but it's just turning and not backing off. My question is, how in the world do you get a wrench on the front side of it?

This thing is making me feel like a amateur and these sausage fingers aren't helping either!

This is why pros have large toolboxes with lots of different wrenches. Not all are included in the set from Sears.

Try a different tool. A good inspection mirror is handy as well.

It's not an easy job "in the car", but it is possible.

I'm thinking I'll need a offset wrench of some sort. I'll get my mirror up there and look. Anyone know if it's a 17mm?

Eric, are you replacing the alternator, or just rebuilding it? I have rebuilt the alternator in-place on my 355 a few times without the need to remove it completely.

Well, my plan was to rebuilt it in place. I could get to all the screws on the rectifier but one. So, I decided to just remove the alternator, but I broke the tensioner trying to do just that. Now, I've got to fix that too.

I did mine during the major just to be safe, much easier on a bench!

That's right, I saw that on another thread. As impossible as it seems to remove the alternator, several guys here have done it. I replaced all of the screws on the alternator with hex heads so I could use the curved wrench to install and remove them. Definitely saved me on the next rebuild. I hope you're able to figure it out without going to extremes.

    Good luck buddy, Henry

Thanks, I rebuilt it in place this morning. Hope it works! Those little screws were a pain!
