I only get one tone. What is the best sequence of checks for the problem? I'm sure this has been discussed before but can't find anything.

    Cheers

Try lubricating the compressor as it may not blowing enough air and/or, check the hose on both horns, one might be lose, disconnected, or crack.

Are you supposed to get more than one tone?

I was wondering the same thing. My 1980 GTSI has the Fiamm 3000 compressor and a plastic single piece horn which looks as if it may have 2 chambers. I serviced the non-functioning compressor and now get (only) one tone. Either the seal needs to be replaced or the horn has one tone by design.

If it's one tone by design, do people upgrade these to two horns?

It should be two horns, two notes.......I should even know what musical 'notes" they are, but...I forgot.

    It's specific to Ferrari.

Early compressors have an oil port, later they do not.

Gladly, FIAMM kits are pretty prevelant now in US parts stores, so you can easily buy the whole thing.

IF you know which two notes...LOL!

Some 308s had a single piece black horn trumpet body. Dual tone.

Yep, I had the same question. I only have the crappy sounding single black horn box. (I never use it because it embarrasses me.) I'm planning to replace it with the twin trumpets shown here in the photos. That's what my 911SC has, and it has the "proper" sound.

My horn is the example shown as item 14, but I'm confused at the responses. Should item 14 produce one or two tones?

    Thanks,
    Dave

I also have the single black #14 and I thought it had great sound. Mine is new as I replaced it years ago by a new factory part so I guess it is a two tone.

Dual tone. The black "single" horn incorporates 2 trumpets.

I just dissected my black box horn unit..(photo here if I can figure out how).
There are indeed two tones built into it... One on each side. I hooked the pump up to the two metal horn units separately, and sure enough, only one would produce a sound.
Was going to switch to the "two red trumpets" design, but don't have any mounting holes for those... So I'm now thinking I'll look for a plug and play replacement of the "black box" design. Seems to be one on eBay of the same model that was used on a motorcycle.

Look around the FIAMM catalog, I'll bet you can find one...
