Just got back from a 10 min drive in my 360 spider with7500 miles and the check engine light came on after leaving a gas station. Oil pressure and levels are fine, not over heating. As my extended warranty from Ferrari expired last month (of course!) does this mean at trip to the dealer? Car drove fine, just wondering how afraid I should be to drive the thing! Thanks

You were at the gas station. Did you get gas? A gas filler cap not tight enough will throw a CEL. Very common, lots of threads on this. I know a code reader can clear it, not sure if the car will clear it automatically. Or you could turn off the master power switch. If you didn't get gas, you will need a reader to find out the code.

Plug in an OBD2 reader and find out what it thinks is wrong. As above usually something simple.

As stated above 90% likely to be your gas cap not being tight enough. It takes a while for the light to go away.

Check gas cap and if loose, tighten. CEL will go away by itself after enough on/off cycles.

Sounds like the treaded loose gas cap. Put an OBD code reader on it to find out and clear. Or give the Ferrari dealer $500 for them to do the same thing! :)

Hey thanks for all the help, this site is great. Where can I get the code reader?

Many simple ones on amazon. Various that use hardware plus an android phone or iphone. Or, you an simply drive to a pepboys/autozone/advanced auto etc and they will let you read the code right there in the parking lot for free.

    This.

Plug is under the dash below your steering wheel. Plug it in. Turn on the key so dash lights come on. Press the scan button and record the code. Then press clear code. Let us know what it reads.

If the code reader says minor EVAP leak, It's most likely the gas cap.

    Srammy,

Get a reader that costs the max you can afford. It seems that not all readers can read all codes. Plus, more$ = more features and diagnostic information. I got an OTC 3111Pro (~$300 at NAPA) that picked up an underperforming thermostat (in our 03 Saturn VUE), replacement of which shut off that pesky SES light permanently.

BTW, going to pick up Izzy at the painter in a few.

Beware of just buying the most expensive one based only on price. I bought a fairly high-priced one, thinking that more expensive probably meant better, and it required that you pick your car from a built-in list so it could read car-specific codes. Ferrari doesn't release its proprietary codes, so Ferrari wasn't on the list, and the scanner was useless on the Ferrari. Fortunately, O'Reilly took it back. I got an Actron for about a hundred bucks, and it has no such list. It can read generic codes on the Ferrari with no difficulty.

You can troubleshoot this pretty easy by swapping the coil pack and sparkplug to other cylinders and see where the trouble moves.

I was able to clear the CEL and it has not come back on after a few trips. If the misfire continued would the light come back on? A misfire could just mean something as simple a a bad spark plug right? Due to work and family it's going to be hard for me to get car to a dealer for a while and was wondering how much damage could I be doing by continuing to drive? Thanks in advance.

You can get a random misfire and clear it. If its a bad coil as it probably is then it will return. Swap it and watch the error move to the new cylinder... then replace the coil and the plug.

The response I get from this site amazes me. For someone with zero mechanical knowledge is changing a coil and spark plug difficult on a ferrari? Spark plug I understand but what is a coil? Pardon my ignorance !
