Saving a Scuderia

    I love these cars, and working on them is nearly as good as driving. 4years ago I drove a Scud and almost bought it, but didn't. Got a red/tan manual 430 instead. Love the gated shifter and heal toe is wonderful fun but.......I never forgot that ride. Today that same car would be +50k over the deal I had. Dumber then dirt, I am cursed to not be able to make a dollar on any car ever. What's that next logical move, of course....

    I purchased a crashed 2008 Scuderia from an insurance auction through a dealer friend. Its got 3431 miles, carbon fiber everything, this car was a garage queen until they day of the accident. A friend joined me for the 1600 mile drive to Austin to pick her up. we drove 25 hours, slept for 4, then drove 25 back.

    The damage looked intimidating but the car was full of potential. I had a good feeling about it even though the rear left and front right had broken suspension components, all wheels were shot, nearly every body panel was damaged from scratched to dented, the only plus was that the interior looked brand new-if you moved the airbags out of the way to look.

    My biggest worry was the engine/trans condition and suspension mount points/castings. Here are the pictures I took the 1st time I saw the car.

    My suggestion is buy it and part them out. You can sell the parts and make $.i know a freind that bought a 458 that was crashed. He end up spending same amount of money in buying use. Plus it will be salvage title.

    That scuderia is a lot of work but it is certainly possible to fix. Few people actually take the right steps and time to fix them right so please do and if you document it well on here, it will certainly be worth it!

    My buddy and I have done this to a stradale and I can tell you the car needs to be stripped to fix it right. We have seen rebuilt ferraris and the biggest mistake people make is cutting corners with bodywork instead of doing it the EXACT way OEM would fix it.

    If you own a repair shop or you are friends with a bodywork shop that can give you very good price on repair, maybe it's worth it...
    Eurospares will give you good prices on parts (not sure how it works on import taxes as it is located in EU)...
    Damage doesn't seem that bad... It looks just cosmetic... Bodywork about $20,000
    Mechanical about $20,000
    PLUS labor
    Do the math...

    I don't know anything about anything but I do know that it'll cost a lot more than $40,000 to fix THAT!

    Front and rear suspension smashed, all wheels ruined, all panels mangled. I'd be surprised if that wasn't $100,000 to fix.

    +1 if the damage was only 40k the insurance wouldn't salvage the car and instead they would pay that money to the owner to have it fixed. My 2 cents.

    As much as I love the idea of this, I have to agree that this will almost certainly not be worth the time and expense, unless the idea is to just remove all the body panels, remove and sell the interior, and use it as a track-only mule.

    Heck of an adventure! You have more moxie than I do but still I have respect for the attempt. Sounds like you are in it for the love so resale is not on your mind and that is a good thing.

    ...and if you hold onto the car long enough, the salvage title may no longer matter. Don't think many would be that put off today by a vintage Ferrari that was once wrecked (and repaired) many decades ago.

    Your best bet is to ship it to Italy where they will fix it for 1/2 or even 1/3 the cost in the US, at 1/5 the time and much better repair quality !!!

    Goal: I'm driving this 3400 mile near perfect Scud for less then $130k total (excluding fluids & tires) with the painted silver stripe and better then factory paint.
    Test: run 10 track days and drive daily for 10 consecutive days.
    Time: test in September, complete before spring.

    The repair estimate I received with the car was $144k. I'm going to do most of the work myself and have the support of an incredible crew of friends, mechanics(including the best Fcar superman), suppliers, and a machine shop. Lets start w a full inspection of engine/trans. Will she start, run, and shift into gear.

    Charged the battery on an AGM charger, oil looks crappy, passenger side radiator had a hole the size of a quarter, and it appears that the auction company attempted to refill the coolant and start the car because the coolant is the wrong type, 100% green concentrate.

    I drained the coolant system and pulled the right side radiator & what was left of the fan assembly. Bought a few odds & ends from auto parts store & home repair place. I took a generic flexible hose and connected the missing radiator input & output. One radiator and fan will be fine for a quick test start. (forgot to take pic)

    *Tip- coolant change - spend $120 and get a vacuum coolant purge kit- I used the airlift 550000 - it also checks for leaks and insures you get all the air out of the system. it took a few flushes to get the green crap out of the system. Requires a decent air supply.

    Ok got oil, got Zerex G05, got juice 12.3V, fuel smells ok but since the car hasn't run in 3-4 months- I did not push the roll over fuel cut reset button. Cranked her over and in about 4 seconds I saw oil pressure. No start.

    Wow this is a big job, wish you all the best!

    I was getting all stressed out about a corrosion bubble appearing on my arch last week, kinda puts that into perspective a bit!

    Success- car starts and shifts into gear. Here are pics of the radiator work around.

    Now to get her rolling.... found lots of broken stuff. Looks like front right and rear left wheels impacted a curb or something very solid, the lower screws connecting both of those hubs to lower arms failed and destroyed 2 of the CCM brake rotors. Not a huge loss as I want to use the car at the track, steel rotors will offer much lower maintenance cost at the expense of unsprung weight. 10# per wheel +40# total. I think the CCMs are incredible but just not worth the cost for any car doing more track then street and I can always go back to them.

    Lots to replace, flamblocs, hubs, bearings, suspension arms, silent blocs, tie rods, rotors, pads, one half shaft and every nut & bolt that took a load in the accident. My dealer will love this.
