That kit's resin body was not terrible to be honest, but the rest of the kit was very simple. FPPM still beats them all and has an engine/gearbox!!

I remember those days. Bud Thon(he left Mountain View CA. and lives out here now) brought a vacuform UMI 512M to Ferrari Expo this year that reminded me how things were back in the late 1980's and early 1990's for bigger scale kits:)

I had a bunch of the UMI kits - absolutely un-buildable (without major work) lumpy resin blobs . OMG they were bad. There wasn't a smooth surface anywhere on those bodies. Threw at least 10 of them away.

I always found that the UMI kits were best if used as door stops.

Thanks Tommy for remembering how thing were in the late 80s early 90s. Yes primitive to be sure, but they were the beginnings of the cottage industries back then. John Johnson's work WAS literately in his cottage. I wish I still had John's Lancia sports model.
Being harsh about those that lead the way is unkind to their efforts back then!! Your model building was primitive at first, too!

I was also one of those who produced resin kits and hand built models back then. CMA Models - Creative Miniature Associates. I also bought and sold many, many kits from cottage industry suppliers in USA and Europe. The UMI products were always amongst the worst - more primitive than almost all other makers - even for the the time that they were being made. I also would not say that they were one of the companies "leading the way."

I think most of the UMI stuff was a little crude like you said, other than the 1949 Ferrari 166 Lemans winner with a body mastered by Paul Fisher wich I thought was very nice. Johnson made some nice bodies but his kits also were very early efforts from the late 1980's and not nearly as nice as they do now. I think Profil 24 might be doing the Lancia in 1/24th scale soon.

They were not at all the "beginning of the cottage industry" and as the consumer I'm entitled to be harsh about something that, IMO, should never have been marketed. Look, I started with FDS and GPM and other lead sinkers and the UMI models were crap.

    Sirs,
I am really glad that this model will be produced, and hereby declare that at least two will be purchased by yours truly. While it greatly resembles Chrysler corporation's early thirties Airflow -designs and Swedish Volvo Carioca, which all I hope I can build using this kit as starting point, I can not see a hint of thirties Ford products in it. I have not bought and will not buy a single RevellMonogram or any other make muscle car model, and am truly happy Tamiya is making this great service to adult model car enthusiasts. I find this as important a release as the ICM's thirties Opel kits. Now if somebody only would waste their effort and kit a thirties... well, basically any sedan car! :)

I have a friend in Denmark that makes a 1/24 Volvo body. He's a slot racer known as Neckcheese.

They have not announced one yet but you never know with them. The only good big scale Dino 206S models I have seen are from Ultimodels in 1/12th and Modelers in 1/24th(Targa Models did a re pop of this kit), both curbside with perfect bodies and nice details. The others I have looked at were not very good. That includes several 1/24th and 1/18th models wich left a lot to be desired!!(MG, Joker, K model, Mini Exotics ect....)

Does ultimodels have a website? And are the kits hard to find?
