I have a 76 currently in restoration- the work it is taking to get body straight and correct is amazing and very expensive - but if it not done correctly everything else is a waste of time and money.

Speaking of dash pads, did anyone notice that they installed a vinyl dash pad in Steve McQueen's 1976 Turbo before the Mecum auction? It previously had an incorrect vinyl speaker-grill dash pad (bottom photo below). They must have taken the windshield out before the auction for the install. Original 1976 leather dash pads are unobtanium and even the vinyl pads are had to come by since it is a one year only dash.

Porsche gave me a front oil cooler as option on my 75 930 . It doesn't have it anymore. Does anybody have this option on his car or it's a mistake ?

    Hello Joe,
    thanks for your feedback...
You mentioned something interesting, concerning owning more than one car.
I started with Porsches since I was 20 (at that time a 914 2.0 4 cyl)... in the coming 15 years this "exploded" to 9 models in total. Only reason: I couldn't pass by some models, because I just love the shape and so I bought what I could afford and looked really nice to me.

3.0 Turbo was my favorite because I like the stories of it being a "tricky" car to handle (what meant that being fast with it, is a challenge) and the wide rear fender design.

At todays prices I would not be able to buy any of them any more.

The last one I bought was in 2005.

Now, 10 years later, in fact already in 2010, I think a bit differently. I am hardly able to move the cars on a regular basis. I realized, keeping max 2 or 3 variants would be more than enough. That is why I decided to sell some of my cars ....but I was so busy with my job during the past years, that I just didn't take the time to sell my cars.

Well, and now, since the beginning of this year, I am hesitating to sell them, as I lost the "feeling", what I could ask for it ....market looks sort of distorted to me. So I stay with them until "water" gets clearer for me.

It may have been available as an option. COAs are usually spot-on for 1970s 930s.

It took about an hour for the install and the vintage dash pad fit perfectly. I’ll take the original out the box for some photos. The construction is exactly the same as this one except the front vinyl is covered with leather and there's a metal sheet wrapped with leather over the top of the dash.

Sure, just think it's funny that your opinion seems to turns around. Some time ago you said this:

In my professional opinion, the 3.0 cars are at a parity regardless of year 1975/1976/1977 (in fact a case could be made for the fact that the last year is the best car)

    And now you're saying this:

I may have adjusted my overall estimation upwards a bit for the 1975 cars, and the 1976 cars somewhat, I still think a 1977 is a $150k car.

So I sold my 75 Turbo and bought a 1977 after your first advice, and now it appears I'm in deep trouble with my cheap viper green car ;-)

    Erik,

Adjusting one's estimation upwards or downwards is what a professional who works in the market 24/7/365 does on a consistent basis. Adjustment of values is the very basis of keeping in-touch with true market values. Why? Because market values are always changing! Its the way markets work.

To give a market-value opinion, and still have the same market-value opinion 6 months or a year later makes no sense, and only shows that one is out-of-touch with a constantly-changing market. So, expect me to change my professional opinion again. And yet again after that. Its what I do on a regular basis.

As regards people in trouble after buying cars on a speculative basis, if its any consolation, let me just say that you are not alone.

Is this the same basic dash as used on 69-73 911 but with leather?

Thanks! The most fun all-round car Ive owned so far.

It wasn't for sale in the past, this time I intend to press the issue and really find out. If it becomes available, and we pass on it, I will share it's availability with the 930 3.0 community.

Yes, but vinyl. I believe the speaker dash pad was the same from 1969 to 1975 with slight variations that still allowed fitment on any 911/930 (e.g., change to the far passenger side attachment point but the front of the 911 steel dash cutouts allowed any '69-75 dash pad installation).

I'm not in it for the money, I owned Porsches long before the market started to take off. I'm trying to build a nice collection. Like yours, my opinion also changes, in regard as to what is a nice collection. I'm more into colors than model year now. Minerva blue, slate grey and viper green are my favorite colors on a 3.0 Turbo.

    Erik,

I'm with you- I have a light yellow 76 that is being restored, can't wait to see it painted. I've personally owned way too many silver cars.

Here are some photos of the original 1975 dash pad that came with my car (in a box). In was recovered in leather in the late-1970s and replaced with a non-period correct dash pad in the 1990s. The speaker grill was missing and the one in the photo is a vinyl replacement I was going to have recovered in leather.

I’ve searched far and wide (Pelican, Rennlist, etc.) but have found no detailed threads on how Porsche fabricated the leather dash pads (possibly starting in 1975). Here’s what I’ve noted looking at other period examples ('75-77), this one and the one installed in my 1979 Turbo:

    1) All leather dash pads were wrapped over black vinyl
    2) Beginning in 1976, a thin metal (or possibly wood) sheet covered the top of the dash pad wrapped in leather. This was attached to the dash pad with glue and flush fasteners. The separate sheet wrapped in leather has a molded edge at the front

I would like to restore the original 1975 dash pad with leather but not sure how the speaker dash pads were wrapped in leather. Did the ’75 dash pads have the thin metal sheet on the top wrapped with leather or were they directed glued to the top of the vinyl? I don't believe a standard sized speaker grill would fit once the leather is wrapped over top of the vinyl. If all 1975 dash pads were leather, were the speaker grills slightly smaller than the vinyl versions to allow for the addition of the leather wrap? Even with just the back piece of leather extending into the speaker grill, there's no space for the grill to fit (see attached, even a standard vinyl speaker grill is a tight fit). With the leather extending on all sides of the opening, and if the speaker grill was wrapped in leather, there’s no way it would fit so how were they made in 1975? Giuliakeka, do you know how your dash pad is fabricated?
