Michael Schumacher's pole #55 @ Monza!

One of his best qualify laps. His 55th pole position in Monza back in 2003. I really miss him together with The n/a V10s.

And he *knew* he'd got it as soon as he crossed the line.

I remember like it was yesterday he grabbed the pole and Luca was all smiles, knocked Montoya off the provisional pole...

I'd rather have much of those days back, and get rid of the hairdryer motors and some of the current drivers too. F1 meant the best until 2006/2007, since then it's been slowly getting slower and slower, and less and less special

I've got many seasons of the V10 era. Even with ****ty video/audio quality it sounds so bloody good! It made half the spectacle of the weekend...

This weekend was historic F1 at Zandvoort and there was also a demo of some mid 90s F1 cars, including a Jordan and Hill's Arrows. Both of these ran a Judd V8, with bloody silencers! Ruined it for me...(the proper historic boys and Freddie hunt more than made up for it, and F2, and a demo of M1 pro car and BMW LMR V12 and on and on...).

Point being that even with a rubbish race, the V10s made it worth while. Especially if you went to a race! No one goes there and complained about the noise...

 

I know, I remember the days of being excited about the racing, wondering who made what developments virtually race to race.....and the sounds, my god, amazing. Might as well be identical carts now

 

Michael was the master of the most terrifyingly quick F1 cars ever, which makes him the best ever in my book.

The groves tires were actually better. The fans had visual wear indicators and the groves had higher grip than the rubber underneath. And they didn't fall off a thermal cliff while still looking fine. So drivers could push until the tire physically wore away. Because there was less rubber in contact with the road and it was tougher they seemed to wear away more finely rather than in big chunks, so the marbles seemed less pronounced off the racing line.

The tires are a big part of why the formula is not as good now as it was in the past.

You make a good point RE the marbles. Perhaps they should go back .

Come to think of it, just give us everything back from late 90s to mid 2000s!

I agree with you. I'm a big, big fan of Ayrton Senna but i also believe that each of his own years.

MS had the total control of the car in any circumstances. I hope for more optimistic news about his health.

it was also pretty much single file parade to...bbut I guess that gets forgotten.

 

It was actually not a single file parade very often, there were some periods of dominance in races, but not as much as we like to think. The pace of development meant that there was almost always a chance for the top six cars to switch positions race to race. Sure, Ferrari won out most of the time, but there were some pretty hard development and tyre battles along the way, Williams, McLaren and others regularly won and almost won races, Ferrari played some pretty strong tactical battles in the schumi years to ensure that they came out on top, it wasn't just Michael winning, Ross brawn and others contributed quite a few of those victories through their strategy on the pitfall, sometimes on the fly.

Way more interesting than the 'dominance' we have seen in recent years, particularly now, when one team has a massive differential that cannot be caught up due to dumb rules

 

It was more interesting to watch, I have been following Formula 1 since 1974 and this is the least interested I have ever been. I find myself watching the old races that I have recorded since 1991 than the current races, even though I know the outcome I find it more compelling to watch. Attended 22 races between 1992-2013, I done spending the money and vacation time on the quality of the current product. The terrible sound and rules that keep the other teams from catching up as well as the driving to a fuel mileage target has taken much of the enjoyment from my following Formula 1.
