It has amazed me that even though 550's have jumped close to $40K in the past 12 months, there are fewer for sale now than there was 18 months ago. What gives?

Most of the available supply has fallen into the hands of collectors. One is available at Marshall Goldman (no affiliation). Will be interesting to hear the price..

IMHO a lot of buyers who would like a Daytona ($700k), a 365GTC4 ($300-400), and 275gtb 's or Lusso's realize that although newer a 550 has the DNA of these Ferrari's and a still somewhat affordable.

I notice they only last for sale a couple days. Entry price seems to be getting closer to $150k.

I have been following the market as well because i will sell mine. Is your guys opinion to wait longer to list it, or get it up now before the season is over?

The car at F of Lake Forest was priced at $179K, then $189K, then $169K immediately after which it went to "under deposit" status. Pricing for the best cars likely to be over $200K soon. With tight supply, expect sellers to fish for the upper range.

Wow! That is smokin up there. As time goes by it will also be harder to maintain a pristine 550 and that will drive prices up too.

I'm seeing a lot of comments on the large increase of 550's. As an owner, I'm very happy. My children are very happy.
My question is why doesn't Ferrari Market Letter show more than $75,000.

My thoughts - I purchased my Maranello 18 months ago and felt at the time that the almost 500 HP, front engine, gated 6 speed was way under valued. It would be nice to sell now and make a quick profit, but what would I buy? To me there's nothing else out there (has to be gated for me) that compares with my 550. It just has an old school feel that newer cars don't have. It would honestly take a lot more than $150K for me to part with it. Guess I'm not the only one out there that feels this way!

I doubt it. I say 185k ceiling for perfect low mileage cars, like mine. :)

History, especially recent history, shows that the owners of the best cars tend to grossly underestimate the values. It's an interesting phenomenon.

Bob got it right at least for me. I was searching for a late 60's or early 70's v12, started with the 330 then 365. At one point I had my eyes on a Daytona for $450K (this was 2011), blinked and suddenly the prices hit $650/$700K, next missed a 365 GTC/4 by one bid at $160K (2013) now north of $300K. Skipped the 80's designs and landed on a 550 earlier this year. Very happy with it.

I turned down $150k for my very late 2001 550 from a dealer some weeks ago. I don't know what they will go up to (or down to) as I have no interest in selling. I had a Daytona for several years and recently sold that as I just preferred the V12 experience of the 550 in every way, although they are very different cars from different eras. I also spent a lot of time behind the wheel of the 575M and I vastly prefer the 550 to that as it's a rawer, more sporty feeling car. So there will be a specific buyer for a 550 and not any of the other front V12s and that will exert a somewhat unique price pressure as well - the 575M has a similar unique buyer and you see those prices do something similar.

At the end of the day, 550s are just great cars and not overly complicated with things like fly by wire throttle and digital dashes and some of the other things that might plague future cars yet is still very fast and performs at a high level. They're not easy cars to replace and I know that there's nothing that quite fits the bill as my 550 does. I have four Ferraris, all special in their own way. The 550 is my only front engine 12 and when I reach for its keys, nothing else in the stable would be an appropriate substitute. It's one of a kind and I think that more enthusiasts are realizing that.

While I think that some people care about making a few bucks and would sell their car for today's prices, there are a large number of 550 owners that are serious enthusiasts and wouldn't sell their cars for anything near these prices as there is just no equal alternative.

From a classical point of view, there is no alternative for the Maranello (....despite a nice 456). You already mentioned the most important points. Love the traditional cockpit layout every time I enter the car, pure steering wheel without gimmicks, traditional instruments and the feeling, that the car has been assembled by hand with care..., with the Maranellos an important age for Ferrari ended....

Sometimes, I ask myself the same question, what about to sell it? With the Maranello I fulfilled one of my four wheeled dreams. There is in it's category no alternative - at least from the newer Ferrari range. Finally, an interesting question always appears:

Which Ferrari car would the primarly owner of my car have choosen from the product range 2015? A sophisticated gentleman, looking to fulfill his long present dream of anunderstated V12 Ferrari....

From what I know, the in-cabin and driving experience of a 550 and 456GT are pretty close. When I get in a 550 from my 456M, I don't go "wow, this is really different and way cooler." Except at the limits, the differences are pretty much about the external aesthetics of the 2-seater v. 2+2.

It's just a matter of time before the manual 456's catch up to the 550's.

I doubt this...It's a 4 seater versus a 2 seater. They have always languished behind the 550 and as the 550 values increase, it drags the 456 with it still remaining behind. Just my .02

I agree but I what that does now is put the 456 as the best bargain in the Ferrari world, especially for a nice gated car.
