I'm in agreement that Mario is one of the GOAT above / beyond F1. He's a great in F1, but not a GOAT of F1. For me, it comes down to 3:

Ayrton - unquestionably the top, for me, his ability was otherworldly, even in "inferior" equipment
Jackie - not just his dominance, but what he did for the sport
Michael - won championships over a long period, some never even see a podium

Jimmy and Prost just outside my top 3.

Gilles is my all time favorite, but just didn't sustain it long enough. Who knows what would have happened if he didn't crash at Zolder...

Can't add too many imo. They will need a certain amount of gps to prove themselves. If they raced in 20 and died prematurely, whilst that is unfortunate, not enough to be in the list tbh. If 2014 was Ricciardos only season he would be rated rather highly but consistency matters and holding top form for a long time (which is why Kimi isn't there). Being a great and having the potential to be great are different things. I think the list is pretty good

    OK, will also be added.

However, and maybe I didn't make this clear earlier - sorry - What I'm after is the "top 5 legends of all time".

And to me anyway, while those two & Bellof for example were fine jockeys, are they really in the running as the GOAT?

Pedro; Would be cool if we could give our top five "value" like 5 points for first thru 1 for 5th, but that's not possible with the polling system here. :(

Anyone know if there's some kind of polling site we could use?

    Cheers,
    Ian

I've always felt Emmo is overlooked. He was a double WDC during the dark years and actually stood up for driver safety once Sir Jackie was gone. I don't know if anyone will vote him as the GOAT, but he belongs on the list alongside some of the other names.

Mika Häkkinen, he had many memorable moments battling Schumacher, and won 2 championships.
a few others, Prost, Mansell, Andretti, Hunt

    In no particular order:

    JMF
    Jackie
    Senna
    Jimmy
    Schumacher

    Prost right there as well.

Tough to cross eras, but the early cars had NO downforce, it was all car control...

    I'm inclined to agree.

With all due respect to all of the above, fine jockeys all, does anyone really believe they're in the running as (one of) the GOAT's?

You can only choose 5 over the history of the sport......

Certainly add Tazio Nuvolari - No problem there (As I said, "my bad" for him not being on the initial list. ;) )

Beyond him, I'm not so sure about many of the other suggestions.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

OK - He was on my initial "guesstimate", but I wanted to keep it at around a dozen.... One of the top 5 though?.......

Prost is already there. [Sorry, "Alain" initially.]

As most know, Mansell is not "my guy". Not even top 20 IMO.

Andretti's been mentioned - If we were talking "motorsport", he'd be #1. But in F1? Top 5? Not to me anyway.

Hunt? One helluva guy!.... I've related stories before. But one of the Goat's? Not a chance.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

    :D

The other thing that's just occurred to me is that nobody is suggesting anyone from the initial dozen should be *removed*...... [Well, apart from Pedro & Lewis, but we knew that. ;) ]

Everyone's adding "their guy"..... But when it gets to the vote for goat1-5, I think it's different.... We'll see.

Gonna go Google "voting sites" later - Got **** I *gotta* do! :( Again, anyone know of anything that'll take, say, 20 options & allow punters choice #1 to gain 5, #2 gains 4 etc?

    Cheers,
    Ian

Just one thing Ian, you talked about Tazio....if we are putting Pre-f.1 guys in, then i agree, in fact he's on my top 5 but , but in that case, you have to put Bernd Rosemeyer and varzi, and perhaps Caracciola....of course of all these guys, no doubt Tazio is the best.

    Seems so;

    Good point.

Sorry Tazio, and with deepest respects, but you're "outta here!" :)

The damn list is already too long! ;)

If Lewis and Seb are on there, then Alonso needs to be on there.

    Nevermind, just saw "Fred"

My intention was not to bring in Bellof particulary in this list but a general question...A very prominent example would also be Rosemeyer if we are taking these years into account. How can one compare him when dying well before his time just as Bellof with todays drivers who can win tons of races as they usually retire healthy....My question is how one defines "great", is it the way they drove (even if it is just one season) or their achievements as both might be completely different...

To be in the top 5 of F1 GOATs you need to have some serious wins and achievements.

"Mighta beens" don't cut it IMO

I think it is hard to compare drivers from different eras! Jimmy and Black Jack to Senna and Michael. Tazio was one of the great ones but too far back. JMF was great also but different era. How about Surtees? What If Emmo would have not gone to Brazilian Chassis and stayed with Mclaren? Some drivers ended up in terrible cars also.

I watched Bellof catch Senna in the rain, the big equalizer. If Ickx hadn't succombed to French pressure and stopped the race (which ironically cost Prost the title), Bellof would have beaten Senna and Prost. He was that good.

Oh and btw: he set the track record on the most demanding racing track in the world. 30 years ago. And it still has not been broken...

I could only vote for an era specific GOE.

Its just not possible for me to compare eras.

If I did vote for a GOAT, it would be a pre war driver. They've been excluded.

I think any serious list of the Greatest F-1 drivers of all time have to have the following:

    Jim Clark
    Alain Prost
    Jackie Stewart
    Ayrton Senna
    Niki Lauda
    Juan Fangio
    Michael Schumacher
    Nelson Piquet
    Sebasitan Vettel
    Jack Brabham
    Alberto Ascari

Nouvolari while an amazing driver is like Wimille and Veyron, Varzi,Chiron et al.... the types of cars were not really well organized in a Formula as they were starting in 1950. I think it unfair to add them into the comparison... however my vote for the best driver regardless of era - Fangio... he raced pre war and post... and was a winner.
