930 Turbo Carrera

I think we should encourage Ryan who runs the 930-registry and who is currently working on an amazing 2.7 mfi bible, to start working on a 3.0 liter turbo booklet

 

All of you have contributed great information regarding the 3.0 turbos. I have learned a great deal about my car through this thread.

 

I strongly believe that the 3.0 turbo's have an even brighter future than what we even see now , and that they are on the way to become the G models answer to the 1973 2.7 Rs, with the euro homologation turbo's especially the 75 models reaching 73 Rs leightweigt status within very little time.

This tread has been my bible of education on these cars for the last 2 years, thanks to all involved

 

Magnus Walker's Ice Green Metallic '75 Turbo should be back on the road in a few weeks according to his Facebook page. It looks like it has a '76/77 U.S. style "Turbo" badge fitted but this of course is an easy fix.

I agree with u... It's always nice to know that the cars u own have plenty of growth rate... However, it's not always about growth rate, the 3.0 Turbo is just a very unique and special car, whether it be a 75, 76 or 77, it stands on a class of it's own. Homologation purposes, 1st ever Turbo 911, short production, and not to forget good looks and so on.

I personally have 2 very rare Right Hand Drive versions, which were just acquired in the last 2 weeks, and I'm not stating my points because I own two 3.0s, but I just feel there's just something truly special about them, they're so charismatic and full of character. I think one just need to get on the driver's seat in order to understand the #turbofever!!! They're ADDICTIVE!!! No other Porsche models have taken my excitement level up to this point, at least that's for me...

There really has got to be a GOOD reference book about the 3.0 Turbo like the Dino Compendium to take the model to the next level!!

 

It also starts to get a bit tiring listening to people talking about the 'cooling down' of the market. Let the market do what markets do and applaud to Rich for his very good contributions. Thanks Rich! You keep the thread fresh and interesting.

Well said, Joe and many of us over the last couple of years have fallen into that trap (including myself - self reflection is key ) and should make a concerted effort to remember why we love these cars in the first place. As I said in the Lamborghini thread: the goal of discussing values should not be to talk up or down the values for ones own gain, but to help those entering or exiting the market, understand where the market truly is without bias, based on the car, condition, provenance, etc.

Good topic...I also agree and stopped most discussion of values a couple years ago and 'get' why it is buggy to many.

 

I've owned Porsche's for over 30 years- never bought a single one as an "investment" always bought them for what car represented- I take as many of them as I can to the track where their performance envelope can be properly exercised, now that my kids are old enough to drive them it's even better. I bought my first 930 over 8 years ago and got lucky to get my hands on a few 3.0 in the last few years- I really can't tell the difference when I drive one if it's worth $25k or $300k, same awesome car. I've stop commenting on valuations- it's fun to make money on a car but it's secondary to everything else- let's drive these pigs!

Hi everybody, I have been following this forum for a while now and I finally decided to introduce my 930.

It was originally delivered in Germany in April 1977 and came to Italy in the early '80s.
One of the last 300 built and Grand Prix White with black leather.
A/C as well as sunroof (rare for a german car).

Two italian owners before me and left abandoned in a garage (dry and safe) for a few years until I purchased in 2013.
I have done about 5.000 km since then with it and no problem at all.
Even went on a track event!
Current total milage is about 115.000 km.

Now I am going to have it completely refurbished mechanically by an official Porsche Center.
I will not re-paint due to the paint being in overall good condition and mostly original.
I am planning to bring it back to nice "driver" condition and not to over-do it and turn it into a showroom piece.

I am in need of changing, among other items, the final part of the exaust system (still ok from outside but is starting to rust from inside) and they tell me it is no longer officially available and should be sourced from Fresinger at a very dear price in excess of 2.000 USD, can anybody among the expert confirm?

I am glad the 3.0 went up in valuation just because more cars can really be restored and put back on the road if the investment makes sense.
If they would be still 30.000 €/USD cars it would not make any sense to invest 20.000 € in a complete engine rebuilt.

I would love to see a book dedicated to the turbo 3.0 (or Turbo Carrera).

My affiliation with the 3.0 goes back a long time when my father used to drive me around in one (Oak Green Metallic) back in the 1970s-80s.

Keep up the good writing and contributions to this forum.

Like a good friend told me, only buy the cars you would still love even if their value drops to 1 dollar!

I love early 930's and have 4 now thanks to Joe who sold me my first one since then they have become an obsession for me

 

I got to examine an early copy the Carrera 2.7 MFI book by Ryan Snodgrass at Monterey and was frankly blown away by it. It is extremely thorough and has very high production standards, includes a lot of information relevant to 3.0 Turbo. It is on par with the Dino Compendium and is the perfect companion piece to Konradsheim's 2.7 RS book. Publisher is Parabolica Press, I've ordered two copies(one to read and one to collect). Greatly looking forward to delivery.

 

Agreed Ryan's work is outstanding and several usefull parallels to the 930 in that book,

I already saved myself an example of the mfi editors version, which I can't wait to get!

 

As I get my 76 930 ready for Rennsport something just came to mind. Exactly 40 years after the mighty 3.0 turbo was introduced to the US as the top of the line Porsche, we will almost certainly get a peak at the new 991.2. And the new base model? A rear wheel drive, manual transmission, 3.0 turbo. How times have changed.

 

There will only ever be one first generation turbo 911, and as much as I enjoy and respect the newer models, there will only ever be one authentic, raw turbo driving experience.

Klaxon – Mixo – Frankani advertisement from 1975. Mixo red trumpets were installed in Porsche 3-liter Turbos and 3.3-liter Turbos through the 1970s.

Nice to see there are more people whit race dna intrested in the 3.0.
Did you own a black GT2 build for track a while ago?
Was serious thinking of buying that car,great build!
You can contact Erik for the muffler,he had a original one for sale last week.
He posted a few back,look for posts regading value you can't miss
Its located in europe and if that dos not work out check Dansk they make a great repo,i bought two of these and i think they are good value.

 

Me too, hope I can get one with the number of my 1976 Carrera MFI. Looking forward to receiving it!
