Sunroof mechanism and bits

Well with the restoration starting to get underway on my Mondial I had a couple yrs ago gutted the sunroof mechanism as it was not operating as it should. Long story short the plastic bits have worn down and also broken apart over the yrs due to age and stress.

After spending some time looking over the design and noticing that the plastic guide tracks are actually injected molded onto the metal arms it makes this project a bit more involved. So unless there is either NOS parts or someone is still mfg them, we are SOL on these parts.

So I sat down last night and designed up replacement parts that could be either rapid prototyped in a 3D printer or injection molded, given the way it was done originally means the new parts would be in two pieces and require a snap feature and epoxy bond to stay put.

Now idea if I'm alone in needing these parts so I thought I'd share this project with the group. I'll get some pics up later that may help explain this.

The rest of the plastic bits are easier as they are not molded onto the metal but are snap in place. Those are a 'slam dunk' for re-pop, these are the metal linkage arms that form the X when open/close the sunroof.

 

Like you, we (my son and I) gutted my sunroof mechanism last week. We found that the post with the white bushing was broken (this is the post that goes from the track mechanism up into the metal plate at the rear of the sunroof). We sort of fixed that with a bolt and plastic bushing from the local hardware store.

however, all the plastic bits are worn or cracked - especially on the large pivitoning arms that actuate the uplocks.

I'd very much be in for a new set if you set out to create/sell them.

The last time I tried the sunroof it worked fine. But depending on price, I would also be up for a set to keep on hand.

I remember reading somewhere (sorry I don't have the link) that the sunroof mechanism is similar (or the same?) as Mercedes' of the same vintage.

I wish, while the motor and cable is not unique to ferrari the level arms and bits are so hence why i'm going to try and get them reproduced. I'm just talking about the plastic bits though.

 

But, I haven't found any commonality with the tracks, plastic guides, pivot arms, etc.

I really, really wish there was another car (MB, Porsche, anything mass produced) with the same mechanism.

Since the bodies were built by Scaglietti, those sunroof parts may have been sourced from an Italian supplier. It might be worth a try to see what other Italian cars were equipped with the sunroofs at the same time/who the sunroof suppliers were at the time?
Often, these items get sourced from specialists. They are rarely unique. The actual sunroof panel probably is due to the shape constraint. But the hidden/mechanical parts?

 

I did do some digging on that front and found......... nothing.

Given the absolute simplicity of the parts and in all honesty the hokey nature of them I lean towards them being an in-house thing, like the goofy window cable arrangement. Maybe it's from the soviet era vehicles, wasn't the steel from there?

I should pick this project back up, got busy with paying protects etc... Now have some free time.
I've taken apart the entire assy and will also need to look at the center section plastic bits.
Time sure flies...
Really really wish the craptastic metal Ferrari sourced didn't rust from the inside out. Might not be able to salvage this coupe

 

On my car the sunroof works perfectly - provided I remove the side/front seal.
It is so hardened it binds. That would be a part to reproduce as well...
