Aussie Ferrari Spotters Thread??

Hey Pap, after you've spoken to Ceva can you let us know the outcome. Last time I asked (which was nearly 10 years ago) there was NO covered car transport to NT; would be great if that has changed.

 

90k miles, I wonder if the engine was rebuilt at some stage

Just half life. there are a couple of 456s in the US with 150,000. miles

 

Looks pretty good for that mileage. Goes to show you can buy a car on it's condition alone and not be too concerned about the mileage.

I also believe it would be the original engine in it.

 

Well, Betsy-Lou has gone in for her first major under my ownership.

Engine should be out on Monday.

How long since it was done last?

 

Four years and 8500 miles

 

Only 4?? you must be made of money.

 

Turn it up. The book says three so I felt like I was pushing my luck!

 

5 years for me.

 

I accidentally left it 8 years once.

Was only about 5,000ks though.

 

that's the most scary.....belts sitting in one spot and losing shape a bit and BANG. OR...maybe it's all just BS

 

I still remember the story about that Mondial

 

Holes from stones I reckon.

They are not going to deteriorate much unless covered in oil or something.

 

I remember a guy in a Mondial QV asking me what I thought the rattling, high pitched noise was in his engine....it sounded like it was coming from the tensioner bearing area.

I told him it sounded like 25 grand if he didn't stop driving it and put it on a truck to the mechanics!

He kept driving it and soon after had to buy 32 valves.

 

I call BS on 3 years, although I have seen the aftermath of a busted tensioner on a 348.

 

Three years probably is BS. As, most likely, is four.

I would have been happy enough to go five, but given it's the first one under my stewardship I thought I'd play it safe.

I'll be interested to see what the old belts etc. look like on Monday.

"Yes, that looks like a belt"...

So, how does one tell if a belt is on the way out?

 

no idea....I've always just been told you can't tell by looking, unless there's actual damage to it.

 

Stretching is one way, but you still need to pull the old belt off to see if it's stretched against the new one

 

Hence why it makes sense to just do it.

It's expensive, but cheaper than the alternative.

 

I once looked at the belt on a mate's Renault Sport thing and said "that doesn't look too healthy", a few weeks later it broke and the usual bent valves disaster happened.

However my understanding is that tensioner bearings are the more common failure with Ferraris.

Cheap skates, I did mine 3 years on the dot along with new tensioners.
