    I'm surprised by how much the horizontal tails are moving, which points to quite a bit of flex in the aft fuselage. One would think that that would be a long-term fatigue issue.

    I've seen videos from Tokyo Narita that showed much more extreme crosswind conditions than that.

    Composite wings and stabs are flexible. That's part of their purpose.

    I think Jim is referring to the fuselage that the stab is attached to, which is metal and seeing a lot of reverse cycling. However aft fuselage structure is generally heavier gage because of this.

    I recall statements when I was in PD that Airbus compromised structural rigidity by having that upswept keel line and straight crown line , eating up structural depth in the 48 section (tail end). Fin attachment structure is shallow, horizontal tail trim mechanism attachment and space is minimized. I noticed that the horizontal tail on the AN225 is also very flexible. Size and span obvious.

    Isn't the A380 horz stab span equal to a 737 wing, or close to it.

    Yeah, pretty much. That little sticker brings back some fun that I had with it some years back. I had a trip to my home town in Florida and I took a bunch of them with me. The last leg of the trip was a short flight on a DC-8-63 and I was the only passenger on board so I applied a dozen of them throughout the cabin.
    Then when the Russians were here in 1990 , I stuck a bunch on their airplane and a couple or so on the AN225. Had a lot of fun with the Russian crew and translators.

    And little did you realize at that time that the DC-8 would eventually become a Boeing heritage airplane! Putting them on the An-225? Now that's funny!

    When I spent some vacation time in St. Marteen I was quite surprised at the amount of flex at the elevator and vertical stab. where it mounted to the fuselage on take off. When the pilot throttled up to start the take off roll the entire rear of the aircraft was twisting and shaking with sheer violence. Just wish i had video of it.
