Well I hate to post this but it is what it is and I find myself in need of some cash...pretty quickly. I've made the hard decision that it's time to move my '78 308GTS on to the next caretaker. I haven't been showing it the love that it deserves anyway so it's really actually overdue.

I have a bit of a dilemma though as there are a few issues...

    1) it's a high miles car at just north of 105K.
    2) I'm currently in the middle of trying to get timing and carb balance issues sorted
    3) It needs a few things but I've also put a LOT of work and money into over the 11+ years I've owned it.

I'm honestly thinking that the market is nuts and I don't want to leave a bunch of money on the table. BUT I also am realistic and know the poor running (if I don't get it sorted in the next couple days) and other small issues mean it's a risk for someone to take on.

I recently did a compression test and all cylinders were well within 10% with only #3 being off by about 8%.

So my thinking is this.... throw it up for around $50k and see what happens and where it shakes out.

Opinions are greatly appreciated. I honestly really hate even posting this but like I said to open, it is what it is.

It sounds to me like you are asking too little. Original, decent cars with no rust are priced at 80-100. You need to recalibrate.

I think you're selling short as well. If you're in a big hurry and you need $50k now put it on ebay with a BIN of $55k and somebody will step up even with the issues you describe.

Not cars with 105,000 miles on them that need a tune up.

Yeah I dont think $50k is too awful low for what it is. I really dont want to sea with fleabay or stealpal if I can help it. But can't live in it so off it goes.

Hagerty values your car based on condition, not mileage. Check their website.
    1978 - 1979 Steel GTS:
    Condition 1 - $110k
    Condition 2 - $88.5k
    Condition 3 - $71.3k
    Condition 4 - $53.9k

If it needs a few thousand dollars to get it to a condition 3 or 2, go for it.

Plus - I personally think Hagerty values run about 20% low.

My advice: Contact PenFed and refinance the car to get the cash out that you need short term. Next, sort the car out over the winter. Sell in the spring for a full and fair price. Rates are too low to let short-term issues drive long-term decisions.

That's not really a great option for me right now. Just not in a great situation. But I think I've also pretty much resigned myself to it going.

I hope there are those folks out there. I'm going to try to get some time to work on it tomorrow and Friday evenings and see what happens. I think if I can get it running "better", it runs now just not great, I will probably post it up here in the next few days.

I really need to make a list of all the extra stuff I have too. New and used parts etc...and see if they go with it or sell separately.

Thanks guys for all the opinions.

If you look at what open auctions really sell for on ebay, his price might be a bit high. Lots of people ask big $, but look at what things sell for. Good running steel 308 and 308QV with 50K-70K miles sell for around $50-55K. If it is running poorly, it will definitely sell for less. I think best place to list it is here, as the fees aren't crazy like ebay. I've sold a few high dollar items lately, and I'm giving ebay and paypal over 10% of the sale! Also, people here will understand what it needs better and not discount it too much.

Yes, but I'm not sure eBay is the best data point. A lot of those auctions go unfulfilled, and eBay in general is a different crowd / market.

Private sale, I think $50K is too low if the car is in decent shape. I'd think - as noted by the post above with the Hagerty valuations - $70K is about right.

Ebay fees to the seller for cars sold over $2,500 are $120. The buyer pays nothing.

I would get it into the hands of an expert, to solve the running issues.

THEN, put it out there at full retail $$, expecting to take a hit, from there, on the "high miles" issue.

Which in fact is not high miles, for the years, but high miles in "Ferrari Land"!

It would appear the shysters in CA have found a new home for my former car in the UK somewhere. I've gotten a few messages from a gent saying he bought the car and would like any info I have. I just hope they were at least somewhat honest with him. Will post updates as I find out more. I will of course gladly share records and info with him.
