    Let's hope indeed for no fatalities and full recovery of those injured...

    That's the second serious crash I've heard... The first one was Walter Roehl, who is very experienced for sure...

    I seriously hope the Porsche 918 doesn't suffered from tricky / flawed handling issues like the early Porsche 930 turbo (original widow maker) and Porsche Carrera GT (RIP Paul Walker)...

    the problem is that like liter superbikes available to anyone who can finance one...these big hp supercars are avail to anyone who can write the check. there was a day whn cars of this potential were only driven by guys named rolf, hans, david...you get the picture.

    the danger in the handling characteristics or design is the driver...who in most cases has no reason to be driving a machine of such capability. 700 + hp in the hands of a seasoned racer is one thing....

    That's really awful. Its hard to tell from the video, what was the driver trying to do? It looks like he just veered right into the crowd.

    Looked like he was doing a fairly simple cone slalom, crowd was in a reasonably safe spot, and he just took it way too fast, lost a wheel on the grass and then lost the whole car.

    Paul Bailey is a pretty decent driver...

    Looks to me he hit the grass with outside rear wheel which send him spinning.

    Everyone makes mistakes, even professional race drivers (kimi spinning the Laferrari for instance after going a bit wide).

    I hope everyone recovers. The 918 can be repaired, I'm sure Paul isn't bothered about the state of the car atm and his first thoughts are with the injured!

    Easier said than done. Reaction is instinctive, no time to think. Same thing happened with Daniil Kvyat at the recent F1 event in Suzuka. He put a rear wheel in the grass and crashed heavily.

    It would not happen if the ESP was on.
    Unfortunately too many guys think they don't need it (at shows like the one above in particular) or turn it off to show off with some drifting.
    Very, very few can drift though, including majority of professional racing drivers.

    You are correct. Most likely he disabled the stability control system which resulted in him losing control as he exited the barricade chicane as seen in the video. I did an extended drive in a 918 and found it to be a very forgiving car but I never disabled the ESP as the Porsche guy would not let me nor would I want to

    had the barriers been cement (or even water/sand filled) instead of what appears to be unsecured/unweighted plastic, it could have prevented the vehicle from entering the spectator area (at the expense of the car and its occupants, of course)

    That'll be a couple lawsuits for the organizers too. It's sad to see how the confidence goes too high. Even as an experienced driver. I count myself to a decent driver group and have to control myself when spectators or other cars are present. the cost is just too high, so rather be the uncool dude that takes it easy.
