I'm going to lease a house on the beach for a few years, and I'm concerned about the salt air corroding things? I'll keep my Ferraris in a detached two car garage, but it's not climate controlled. Would a dehumidifer solve the problem? Any other suggestions? Thanks for your help :)

I have been using a Carcoon for years now that is designed to prevent condensation. Here is a picture of the unit. Carcoon.com, they are based out of the UK. It also goes a long way towards keeping your car clean!

Without a vapor barrier in the structure the dehumidifier would be running most, if not all, of the time unless the ambient humidity outside dropped below the setting on the unit.

Not sure what level of humidity it would be able to keep and non-insulated and non vapor barrier structure down to.

FWIW, I tried this with my boat to reduce mildew during periods of storage at my dock and it did little to help. The unit couldn't keep up. The boat was sitting in the water in this situation so your garage might be different.

You would also have to hook up a drain line on the unit and find someplace for it to dump or be ready to empty it almost every day.

For the moderate cost of a dehumidiffier it is probably worth a try though. Just don't run it on even a heavy duty extension cord. Plug it right into a dedicated circuit. (Ask me how I know, lol)

How much are looking to spend? In order for it to be effective, as previously mentioned, you'll either have to have a vapor barrier or be able to create positive pressure inside the environment. It would seem that most average or above average construction along the coast would have vapor barrier installed. Also, how big is the garage?

Thank you for all the insights. It's a small, older home (but very nice) with a small two car garage. Here's the best picture I have :-j

Not enough room for carcoons. Plus I'm going to drive both cars often. I'll wash and wax them regularly, and I'll put the car covers on. I may as well try a dehumidifer (I won't use any extention cords :)

It's a first world problem for sure. LOL

Look into a free standing air conditioning unit... Home Depot sells them for around $300.00

You can get them with pumps and that is handy if you need the water to go and over something, like into a sink or bathtub.

Thanks for the information. I haven't starting looking into dehumidifer yet. Can you recommend any I should look at? Thank you :)

you will need an ac mounted on the outside wall or on a window and a dehumifier set at between 30 - 40%. The carcacoon will not protect it against oxidation. My wife gave me one for Christmas one year and it was a pain to install every time you took the car out.

That's what I was thinking too. I'm going to drive both cars a few times a week so a carcoon would not be practical for me. But not a bad idea for someone looking for a long term solution :)
