Have had my 458 spider for just a few weeks now. Recently sold my 430 and the difference between those 2 cars is obviously dramatic.

My question has more to do with daily driving.

I have been reading where there are even more upgrades on the 488 gearbox but it's hard for me to imagine the change being very perceptible. This 458 rides pretty nice, and does anyone have comparison on their test rides from a daily drive aspect?.

Really?! I've never owned an F-car before but took delivery of a new 458 in April, I found the gearbox a bit naff in terms of smoothness, granted your not buying this car for smoothness but coming down through the gears mine jerked, a lot. Going up gears, it was fantastic however and granted thats more important, but I found it odd that the Porsche PDK was both rapid changing and smooth whereas my 458 was not.

This is one of the reasons I have just sold it. I have had an F12 on a 24 hour test drive and found this to be much better, granted the distance of the engine to the rear is greater and this will bring smoothness with it. I've keen to drive a 488 as I've read that its a smooth box still....

Ive found the harder I drive my 458 the better the gearbox feels- even in normal driving. I don't know if it really breaks in or if this is the result of computer systems learning how I drive etc. I now have about 5,000 miles on my car. However, it was a bit gaff to borrow your term at first. Now its just lovely- and some of this could be simply my getting used to it.

I tested the 488 a few weeks ago, and with regard to gearbox, the 488 is slightly better with smoother shifts.

    Thanks! I'm coming from a 430 so I kinda think it's a Cadillac. Lol

So impressed I'm not keeping the Turbo S........but then again you can see I impress easily. :)

The 488's transmission is silky smooth. I bet if you had earplugs in the passenger seat, and couldn't hear the engine, you couldn't tell when a shift occurred. Even at full throttle in race mode, there's barely a jerk when upshifting.

It's a level of refinement more smooth than the 458's transmission.

I like the fast and affirmative shifts of the 458.

I love the speed of downshifts in my 458 but I honestly prefer the kick in your pants upshifts of the F430 in race mode. The thought of a smoother shifting 488 does not sound attractive at all.

I thought the same thing coming from a 458... how the heck could they make it any better? Then I took delivery of my Speciale.. question answered.. it can be better! My FF is smoother.. wouldn't say better but it suites the car better for sure.

All these cars have the same DCT it's the software that makes all the difference.

Thanks! Yeah, very hard to imagine. Then again, that's probably what the people were saying when the Model T was made. :)

The 458 has three different shift-strategies. If Race is too jerky try Wet - no difference to a Porsche PDK there.

My speciale jerks at Race mode only. Wet mode is smooth, however i still prefer the harsh upshifts.

Maybe because the big torque the 488 shift smoother than the 458, race mode included

Try flicking the paddles for a smoother shift. Never lift while upshifting...it jerks (just like the F355 and 360)
