Is there a good replacement rotor for stock brakes?

    Dave,

The GiroDisc 2 Piece floating rotors are direct replacements for the stock brakes: Rotors

GiroDisc rotors are commonly found on F355 Challenge cars. The OEM cross-drilled rotors were prone to cracking.

I have GiroDiscs on my car...

I have the Brembo Brake option on my G35 Sedan driver and I'm able to buy the rotors individually from Brembo. And aren't 550 OEM brakes manufactured by Brembo without the logo?

I did some searching into that as well and believe you are right, the Brembo partnr. seems to be 09.6802.20

I noticed there is a third bulk buy of complete sets of front & rear rotors coming up that also fit the 550. See the link (to see the pictures you have to register on the forum).

Sports Maserati brake discs - third group buy

Looks like it is better quality and a lot lower price than original. I have signed up for a set, perhaps there are more interested?

Note that I am in no way affiliated to this bulk buy so don't see this as an advertisement, but merely as info that might interest others as well.

Maybe a stupid question, but when I bought 4 new discs for the 550 a few years ago, I was surprised that the Ferrari-supplied discs were really not expensive, almost "normal" price level. Has that changed?

    Bernhard is right.

The Brembo rotors for my 1994 Maserati Ghibli costs more than for the 550.
If they raised the prices, i'm happy that i have bought rotors and pads for the front axle about 4 years ago, just to have them here in my stock.:)

    Dave,

If you find some let me know or if you work a deal with girodisc let me know. I can always use a set. Maybe I'll check to see what stoptech can do. Sometimes they can make the hats for their rotors.

Finding replacement front rotors for the GT is not easy, as the rotors are smaller than the later cars.
I have tried several suppliers and found none, although I did not try Giro Disc.
I had even considered to buy new rotors of larger diameter and have them turned down to the correct diameter.

Eventually my original rotors had enough material left to allow for resurfacing and further use.

One other alternative would be to replace the entire unit rotors + calipers at the front.

Dave, I replaced my front rotors with cross drilled and slotted rotors from Frormula Dynamics out of Los Vegas....$295 each. I have had them for a couple of years and maybe 15K miles. I don't track, but the slots seam to improve heat disapation and reduce fade on mountain drives... Which was driving me crazy. With braided SS lines and Pagid pads, my braking is much improved for not much money. Doug

Hello all Mike here from Girodisc, we offer our direct replacement two-piece full floating front rotors for the 550/456 that are 100% plug and play with the OEM calipers. Their two piece constriction saves about 4.5 lbs. per rotor and because they are proper directional vane rotors they run cooler than the OEM counterparts prolonging the life of both the rotors and pads. We actually have a 456 here as one of our shop cars which we've been running our front rotors and S/S pads all around on for the past couple years.

Unfortunately we do not offer a rear solution for these cars, if we could we would. The issue lies in the parking brake diameter. In order for us to have room for the hardware that connects the hat to the rotor we would need to space the caliper out due to it's proximity to the parking brake drum. We run into the same issue with some of our Porsche kits however the calipers on those cars are radial mount so we can easily put some spacers under the calipers to get the clearance we need. On the 456/550 an axial mount caliper is utilized so we would have to manufacture a complete bracket to relocate the caliper and we just don't have a lot of real estate in there.

If anyone is interested in the front rotors and/or pads please feel free to get in touch, we stock both for these cars!

Great rotors from Girodisc, now they just need some rear ones, too.
