I've always been a little curious as to how many Boxers there are in the United States given the car was never officially imported and all specimens in US came via gray market. I've asked a couple mechanics for their opinions and the common refrain is "probably a little less than 100" carb'd boxers and a few more injected ones given later production date and slightly higher production numbers.

One of them gave their back-of-the-envelope math for carb'd models as

    929 produced x est. 20% imported and federalized x 50% still drivable = 93

Now they are over 25 years old and climbing up in value, I suspect geography/federalization is less of an impediment, but think it is probably a second-order factor.

Curious if others have guesstimates or even better, a semi-accurate count.

    Thanks,
    Jim

They may have been gray market but dealers here were free to by them directly from Ferrari and import them. The dealer I was at received an award for selling more BBi's than any dealer world wide. A large percentage of the 400's came here as well.

BBi's were so easy to federalize I suspect your guesstimates are off.

Must of had to have been "regulated" by DOT....thus couldn't this info be gathered thru DOT?...at least to get a handle on the "federalized" eg 'legal on US roads' number of cars..then throw in a smaller percentage that 'slipped thru the cracks'. How many shops did this? Amerispec plus ???

My understanding is a bunch got forced back out of North America by the government which is why you see federalized boxers for sale in Europe today. So the import numbers would mean nothing really.

I doubt that only 50% are still drivable. It's not like we are talking about a Datsun.

Does seem high-ish to me too, and (we would be sad ;)), but depends how "driveable" is defined -- "not driveable without some serious sorting/work/recommisioning" = maybe; "not ever driveable again" = d*mn, I hope not...

Never heard that and I know a number of people that imported them commercially. The market saw to it quite a few went back so the result is the same.

Gene: I would be surprised if there are 50-60 US 365's. About 15 years ago, we thought the number was closer to 20 cars in the states. Maybe additional cars have been imported lately, but in the 1990's a number were exported to Japan, etc.

    Which Boxer For You?

A reasonable guess would be that perhaps 25% of the total production of 2,315 cars, or about 550, Boxers were imported into the US, all through the gray market as there was never an offical US Boxer model. With the toughening of American emission laws in the late 1980s and a tremendous export boom to Japan and back to Europe, between 1985 and ’91 perhaps half of the total US Boxer population was sold to Japan or back to Europe, resulting in perhaps 250 Boxers remaining in America today.

Not really indicative of the number but at last weekends Boardwalk Ferrari local FCA show there were 3 LaFerraris, 3 Enzos, a F50, a F40, two 288 GTOs and No Boxers. I was lazy :( ...again.

I used the number of 250 in the usa based on some of my discussions with Dick Fritz.

It's hard to believe that there just about 250 Boxers in the US. Judging from what I've seen taking place in the Boxer market in the last 10 years and applying the basic supply and demand principles, it seems that there are a lot more. Scarcity does not come to mind with the BB's.

I'm in agreement with the 250 number as I read on this a ways back and also had conversations with Dick Fritz & Ron Spangler (who imported/federalized my car for Algar) a ways back and for some reason the number that stuck in my mind was that there were roughly 300 or so in the USA

Regardless of what numbers you hang your hat on, we are talking about very few cars in the scheme of things

The 50% drivable comment leaves me questioning that figure because- Don't forget that as soon as a car becomes valuable, it becomes worthwhile to pull out of storage and work on...

I just rough counted from Nathan's Boxer Book and we get approximately 55 365's, 200 BBs, and 270 injected Boxers.

Understanding both, that the numbers are old, and also that a large number of cars don't list a nation, it is reasonable to assume the numbers have changed. But there has to be a number of cars that list no nation that are in the US. If you go by the percentages, there may be another 100 or so cars in addition to the listed cars.

However, and I have no hard data so my opinion is only that, I find it hard to imagine the US with its wealth and very large appetite for Ferraris won't have close to those numbers now. That would include cars that left and others that have come over since the DOT days. There are many of these cars that are just "hiding."

My estimate would be somewhere around 600-700 BBs of all variants in the US.

Just throwing it out there for comment! :)
