A friend of mine recently purchased a 1987 328 GTS (# 68829) and will be entering the car in the 2016 Cavallino Classic. In preparing the car for Cavallino, the air box needs to be stenciled and the issue of when the stencil of “Ferrari UFI” changed to “Ferrari” has come into question. In researching other threads, it appears to be sometime in a late 1987 model or an early 1988 model, but nothing definitive. If anyone can provide insight into when or what VIN this change occurred, based upon knowledge or actual ownership, I would be most appreciative. Thanks in advance.

I dont' know when it happened, but I know when there still was the UFI writings and when anymore: on semptember 30, 1986, there still was (VIN 66731), while on june 1st, 1987, (VIN 71959) there wasn't anymore.

I have to say that I tried to pensil the 208 turbo writing with UFI, but it was impossible: too thin. Is there someone that can do it?

Thanks Jeff. I saw the engine bay of your car when Bullfighter owned it and it had the "Ferrari" stencil.

Thanks for your input Alberto. As far as the stencil for the 208 turbo, you might try Italian Auto Parts, as they have both stencils for the airbox. I know the turbo was for the European market, but you might try them. Below is the link:

Hi Paul, I checked on their site, but I didn't find it: could you tell me somthing more where It's located in their site?

I please by me two stencils like this one, that is fro my 208 GTS turbo : I will buy them from you, as need that writing for othe two 208 turbo I have. Isn't there to buy the original cover with the OEM painted writing like my one in the picture instead of just a stencil?

    Thank you very much!

    ciao

    Yes, That's it.

You have to send your airbox cover to them and they will send you a restored one back.

Hi Alberto - you do have to send the air box, either the top or whole box, and a replacement will be sent back. Unfortunately the stencil is not sold separately. Try calling Charles at one of the phone numbers on the web page to discuss your options. Charles is knowledgeable and does own a 328. I will help if you need assistance.

    So far the range is:

Highest "Ferrari UFI" VIN is 66771

    Lowest "Ferrari" VIV is 71403

Any more input would be appreciated.

I think that 250 USD just to put a stencil on the airbox cover is very expensive. But I wil try to call, sooner or later, as I have already perfect airbox covers, that just lack the white writing.

Thank you very much for your help, maybe I will need it again before solving the problem.

    ciao

There are instructions on the forum if you search, but basically it says to glue the stencil down with 3M adhesive and make one or two light passes with white spray paint.

If you buy the stencil, it can be re-used and I would like a shot at it too.

When that changed is not part of our institutionalized information on those cars. To be honest, when it comes to a 275 we know every car made in detail but when it comes to the later cars the knowledge on those small details is still lacking and a few of us are working to fill in those gaps. The rule of thumb is when we do not know with certainty the decision goes to the entrants favor.

I do not think you will have trouble with either version. If the later version is chosen there is a second stencil on the back side of the lower half of the housing.

I am a customer of the Italian Car Parts air box restoration service.

What I learned from sending my airbox cover to them is that they (Charles et al) subcontract the crinkle painting and the silk screeining of the logos to two different subcontractors. The quality is excellent, as is claimed. They do not stencil; they use silk screen method. (I can't imagine a DIY stencil from eBay getting anywhere near the same quality.)

My airbox had the diamond pattern abrasions from rubbing on the engine lid and the lettering was getting tired. Italian Car parts stripped it and did a full restoration. It was returned looking absolutely brand new.

(As a side note, the 1983 QV airbox lid is different from later years -- 84 to 89 3x8s have a small step at the back while the 83 maintains a smooth taper. Italian Car Parts did not have a 1983 core on their shelf, so they had to put my original airbox cover through the restoration process. It took 7 weeks.)

Does your air filter lid lettering look exactly like my oem one or there is some small differences? Lettering edges are perfectly straight or do they have some small defects? Are they painted with any thickness or are they just adhesive?

I mean: is there any even very small difference from this perfect ad OEM one?

    Thank you very much

Thanks for your input Brian. I am helping the new owner prepare his car and as you know the platinum level is now 97 as opposed to the previous level of 95; which reduces the margin of error or acceptability.

Alberto- the work on the lettering is perfect, in my opinion. I am sure they can send you a photo of a finished air box so you can compare to your original.
