Have a slight fluid leak from the auto box area on my '84 400i. Does anyone have a photo of the underside if the box, that is from the ground looking up? Cannot find such a photo on the Internet.
    Thanks

Here are some pics of mine....before cleaning.
Just a few places to leak.....
    1. Oil pan, gasket can be replaced easily.
    2. Front transmission seal, or front pump gasket/o-ring, unit must come out.
    3. Rear output seal, also must remove trans.
    4. Seal at lower end of fill tube, not sure if can be replaced without removal, not much room.
    5. O-ring seal at vacume actuator on side, very close to floorpan, no room to remove.
    6. Seal at speedo sensor, more room here.

Thanks Gary, that's really helpful, along with the list of things it might be. I intend to get the car warm, put it back in the garage and place a newspaper underneath, then look an hour later to see if it gives me a clue as to where it might be leaking. Although I expect to have to clean it all down first before really locating where it is leaking. Next job is to find a pdf file on the gearbox.

    Peter..
ask around at your local auto supply for "leak check dye", then find a small cheap battery powered u/v light....pour in the dye and warmup the trans...the leak will glow blue or white under the u/v lamp.
That should give you a place to start !

You might also check the dipstick tranny grommet. Mine leaked from there once, way back when. It will leak from the bottom of the dipstick grommet and from the tranny until it finds its own level (like a diff when you fill it to the filler hole). Then it will stop leaking, and it will drive you nuts trying to decect it. Then when you start the car and then stop it again, it starts all over again. Hope this is of some use to someone. Thanks. Jq.

The selector shaft seal has dried out on mine & leaks if I let it sit in neutral but not in Park where it has hardened into that shape.
These seals are cheap but not easy to get out. I purchased a seal remover tool but there is not enough space to use it. I have also read that the selector shaft can be removed & the seal replaced with the drain pan off so I will do this next time I change the filter.

I fought ATF leaks for years. The original steel pan flanges bend at the bolts. I change to a Aluminum pan which is rigid and still had leaks because the pan came with SS bolts which did not hold torque and loosened. Once I replaced those bolts and used a composite gasket (not paper or rubber) I have no more leaks. Summit Racing is place to get Ali pan.

Gary was it, you can change the rear seal with tranny in car but the diff and drive shaft must come out; I did it two years ago.

    Mine leaks as well.

I just put more fluid in when it gets low.

    Simple solution !

Thanks for all the advice and help so far. It is not a big leak but I find it annoying as it spoils my newly painted garage floor, which I did just for the 400i. Fortunately my Triumph Vitesse, which I have had for 20 years, has not sulked because of the special treatment given to the 400i.
As an interim solution I also like rustytractor's method of just adding more fluid!
