so what? the manufacturer made their car with a specific tire. that's the one that gets tested. if they offer an optional tire, then that's ok too. the rest is bs (which is what this thread has become).

from your statement, that means the p1 should have been on the p zero tire as well since thats the tire that was developed for the car.

The problem in switching tires like McLaren did is that it has indeed become a tire war, not a car comparison. Tires have a tremendous impact on a car's performance, and by switching to track focussed tires in order to be more competitive, McLaren has effectively changed the channel on the spirit of the comparison. Remember when these cars were being introduced? No one was talking about tires then - it was about hp and downforce.

If you look at the early results of the p1 (Corsa tires) vs 918 (first Anglesey test, and Autocar test) the 918 was clearly the quicker car. But by changing to much stickier track tires, McLaren got much better lap times without making any changes to the hardware or software of the car.

So if Ferrari or Porsche offer some super sticky optional track tires for their cars, it would also benefit their track times - but that is not what this comparison should be about in my opinion. It should not be Pirelli vs Michelin, or Corsa vs Trofeo, but focussed on the cars instead.

everything has impact on cars performance!!

you test the car the way it comes with whatever options are offered by the factory. the other companies could have offered better tires but didn't. so that's it.

what do you guys not understand about that?!! my god, this thread should be a great one but the constant complaining about the tires, the driver, the track, etc makes it so tiresome. get it? tire-some

Exactly. If McLaren hadn't played games after the car was introduced, no one would be talking tires.

so what, where does it end. Porsche have been updating their cars since day 1. it happens. there was a tire update. there will be more tire updates. there will be sw updates. there will be hybrid updates. these are not static machines anymore. well the p1 and 918 keep improving don't know about ferrari. you run your best at the time you can and life goes on.

Just one question: how much time the Trofeos gain at that track?

    If Ferrari: tons of seconds
    other mnfs: slower 0.1s ;)
my bet is at least 1/2s per minute, but it surely depends about car and track too.....

1s per minute over the already sticky Cup 2 on a GT3!!! Here is the proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrLQpAt5Mes

I'm talking about TroferoR Vs Pzero Corsa
if less tahanhalf second per minute, TrofeoR are just a joke
even so, look at what an old Gallardo (squadra corse) can do on TrofeoR...

A drag race or a rolls on test will show exactly how the car accelerate and how it delivers n the power to the ground.

Now I'll say nothing, but I'll say i tested the 3 against each other.

Well i say the outcome No.

some here knows me and knows the info someone don't and I'm not welling to share it because I'm not representing any factory nor favour one to another i buy anything that looks ne beautiful and fast.

More like a second and a half per minute quicker than the Corsas!!! Of course this plays a big role in drag racing too...

Drag race from a roll doesn't really entirely cover how the car delivers power to the ground. Depends on when the roll starts, and there is some difference in ability to put power down effectively around a curve vs. a straight line. The car can do a lot of sophisticated power application management these days that optimize power application around a corner as traction at different wheels changes while weight balance shifts, application of brakes, and all wheel steering. Aerodynamics matter too.

Watching a koenigsegg accelerate from a roll vs. a 918, and then watching how they perform on a track can tell very, very different stories...

I'm new here, have never driven any of the big three. But I've read through this thread (or most of it) and it's just devolved from how great the actual cars are (and I'm assuming they're all great) to which one is a half a second faster on some track (.3 seconds is a blink so the argument is over basically the blink of an eye difference).

I have a 458 and when I push it on the road I really don't think I could handle anything faster. It feels so fast, fun and aggressive. I love driving it. Isn't that what these things are suppose to be about, how fun they are or how much we enjoy them? These three cars are already so far above my 458 which means who could honestly deploy even 70% of their potential on the road? So why is the point of arguing over half a second?

Extreme cars, extreme conversation! At these levels, the cars embody fandom, healthy competitiveness amongst the car makers on what "costs don't matter" thinking can bring to the table. Well, not "costs don't matter" outside of perhaps the Veyron, but close to that logic.

I moved from a "quick car" (~5.5 sec 60 / 13.5 sec quarter) to a "fast car" (~4.0 sec / 12 sec) to a "very fast car" (<3.5 / <11.5) and quite frankly, other than the sense of control in being able to pass anything on the road, you kinda just get accustomed to it. So I completely agree with you. (And I have all 3 cars... the performance is not what defines the enjoyment).

But the competition between the makes here is more than that, I think. Frankly, McLaren brought all the scrutiny and focus on themselves by making claims out of the box that never held up. Ferrari brought attention by being their usual selves and not allowing testing / open and honest comparison. Porsche... well... quiet confidence sort of won the day for them.

I read the world's fastest cars in 87 when it was F40 vs. Diablo vs. Yellow Bird, and those few mph on top-end speed were enthralling. In reality, didn't mean a whole lot, but when in the ultra car territory, what else is there to talk about if not comparing and arguing? :)

All in all, 918 seems like best-packed car!

Tyre discussion shows again that McLaren is trying hard to keep up with true big players in this game - Porsche & Ferrari.

That hard effort from McLaren should be respected :D
