'90ish 911 values have jumped THIS far?

I know we're not supposed to talk value within the for sale thread, so I'm tossing this over here..

Been pondering an early 90's C2, but find mid $60K mark over the top. So I hopped on Hagerty and see #2 cars (about where this one as advertised falls) as Low $30K range.

Well Porsche experts, who's right. The guy selling his $65K 911 on FerrariAds, or Hagerty, or somewhere in between.

I dunno, just seems like a lot of money for a run of the mill late air cooled 911. Pains me to think I sold my 1990 ten years ago for around $20K, which I thought was good money for the car.

Am I crazy? Are these really becoming $60K cars?

I was thinking the same thing.

I just traded my 993 (which bring more money than the 964s often) and I got 49k. The dealer has it now listed for 67k.

But, to answer your question, air cooled 911 prices are nutty, but this one seems quite optimistic.

 

I suspect a bone stock car might bring better value. But again, what the heck do I know, maybe gently modded 911's are all the rage!!

They didn't make many 964 c2 coupe especially manual trans.
With regular sc or careera goes for 25-40.
A nice 964 c2 coupe 5sp. Is a good buy for 45-55k.
They are by far more rare and more update.

 

Looks to me like they made 18,000+ C2 coupes during its lifetime, toss in C4 and the number grows to 31,000+. I find it hard to believe that a majority of them were delivered with tiptronics, and even if they were, that would still leave 7,000 of these out there.

Do you have any real data to support this POV?

And, with all the changes, stripes, paint that needs fixing, you see this as a $45K car? That's still pretty good money in my mind.

Oh, here's one for the gang.

Is Guards Red the resale red of Porsche? Do red/tan cars fetch a premium? Or is black the go to color? Or something else?

I don't care for the stripes but like the track mods (seats, harnesses, wheels and tires, looks like maybe some aftermarket suspension stuff?), but then again others won't as its not original and can be an indicator of abuse. but the Porsche market is far more forgiving of modifications and track use than the Ferrari world. to me this car represents a good car in fair condition than can still be used and enjoyed (i.e. not a super rare garage queen/concours entrant). so to me it's a $45k car, but maybe not to everyone

as for color, I don't think that's as dependent as Rossa Corsa for Ferraris but silver black and white seems to account for 75+% of cars. IMO this car would be more marketable if he ditched the stripes, fixed the paint bubble and gave it a good detail. and of course lowered the price $20k

 

shop around and you will see what I said is true.
if you can find a c2 coupe 5spd in decent shape under 35k, snap it asap.
there are many people out there looking for 964 c2 coupe 5spd, and when they come on the market (with fair price of course.) they gone quick.
however, this 65k one is not one of the case, it does look good, but for 65k, I would buy a mid-80s 930 and be happier.
I have owed 964 targa, convertible, coupes, turbo(965).... they are nice cars.
but for fun, a good 911sc or carrera will do so. for much less money and are easier to find. they are all stick shift too. other than some sportmatic cars.
there is a high mileage RS america on ebay, white with no sunroof, for similar money of this one, looks great and much more rare car than a c2.

yes, they made less 964's than 993's. The 964 is no longer the ugly duckling and command close to 993 prices. Manual C2/C4 coupes highly sought after

Agree. I look at all the modifications as a liability, but for $45K someone could probably buy this, correct it, and not be too far underwater.

 

I'd love a 964, but much like my extended search for a 308, I would never pay the prices that are being asked. I eventually found a sub-30K 308, when many told me I wouldn't find one, it was a matter of luck, timing, patience, etc.

What was the total production for 964 and 993?

 

Lot of room between bargain $35K, and high priced special car at $65K.

Cars.com (C2 &C4) has maybe 8 or 9 that fall under $45K, 5 speeds, under 100K miles. Not much at $35K although this $38K car looks ok. http://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/648038034/overview/

without doing much digging I'd guess Tim Holt has a couple pristine examples for close to this money, as he's always at the top of the market for price and generally quality.

So, maybe $65K is top money, and $35K is bottom feeding, making this particular car wishful thinking.

another thing, I would not buy c4.
unless you need all wheel drives in snow or bad weather.
c2 are more fun to drive and easier to take care of.

use to think that way too, until I actually bought my c4 3 years ago. at the end of the day, buy the best example you can afford.

 

Don't really want or need C4 living in SW Florida, FWD a needless add-on. Does AWD improve handling at a small MPG price? But also complicate wheel alignments, cause higher maintenance etc? Probably does.

Was thinking C2 anyway.

And a photo of the one I let get away. Sold it just after I got the Dino. NEVER should have let it go.

My experience exactly. When I was looking for a 911 years ago I tested both C2's and C4's and they both felt the same to me so I went with a C4 for its predictable driving characteristics. If you brake in a turn under extreme/slippery conditions in any air-cooled rwd 911 the back end swaps with the front in a heartbeat. Not so with a C4. The drivetrain is bullet-proof (those old myths were debunked years ago). I found a '91 RoW ('Rest of World' is euro-spec in Pcar lingo) locally and have loved it ever since.

The mods on the 64K one can easily be reversed, except suspension which is a plus for enthusiasts. Two other 964's are listed at 65K at dealers. So clearly, the market for 964's are strong, especially, model years, 92 and 93s, in which, it was a rather limited production.

 

Tim Holt is a great guy, and a super salesman. He is not a market maker for price on these cars, he is a high priced explorer. I bought a 1990 C2 from Tim a number of years ago, and whittled him down a bit on price, but he is known for having extraordinary examples at extremely premium prices.

I don't think you can use his listings as a measuring stick, other than as one for exploring the farthest reaches of dealer chutzpah.
