my f1 355 used to go into first like clockwork everytime, now the other day it refuses, it will completely bypass first everytime and go to second, it makes it horribly undriveable. does anybody have any ideas what it could be?

Is you slipry mode button pushed?

If not get it to a shop you need an sd to check it.

It doesnt sound like anything i have ever heard of. If the transmission wont select first and jumps to second usually the transmission light would flash.

Do you have a work shop manual.
If you do you could try a octopus self learn.

    Do all other gears work?

Does it shift throug all other gears whether the car is running or not?

yes I googled the heck out of this issue and haven't come up with anything. it worked fine a couple months ago and now just started this new trick, all other gears seem to work fine. the transmission light never seems to flash, ive even tapped the pump/solenoid mechanisms at the left rear with a sledgehammer in case they needed a little convincing and no change.

Push the low friction button and check if the light goes on. If it lights does the transmission seem diff or the same?

Also try the automatic button and see if it works properly.

Their are a couple of things i can think of. The first is the gearbox sensor is malfunctioning so clean the contacts, check the plug, and check the bottom of the gearbox to see if the wires are damaged etc.

I take take off from 3rd gear in my M6 by feathering the clutch out. 2nd is a piece of cake.

In fact I had to drive home one time from the race track with a blown clutch slave cylinder. It was pretty easy you just had to work the clutch slow enough that it did not breath in air as you released the clutch pedal.

But, you have an F1 where you don't get to control any of that "goodness".

So i assume the light works for low frict. Try shifting all gears while engine off. Have a friend do this while car is on jack stands and watch the actuator to make sure its not loose and moving.

Final thing would be try reverse first then first rather than neutral to first.

You still need to get it to an sd computer though. It will tell you right away.

Theoretically this should not happen it should also give problems in another gear if one of the selection valves is not working. Since it is happening as i said you need a shop with an sd.
Sorry i could not get it sorted.

Do you mean you can select first? When the low friction button is pushed.

The manual describes it as a mode for slick roads, shows a sketch of a 355 in snow, no real world application!

    Rain/Snow mode.

If I recall correctly it just shifts at 3k RPM when activated.

    I call it "wife mode".

You guys should really push the button and try it for youself then you will know. My understanding is you should not be in sport or automatic but low friction is supposed to govern anyway. The car will only start in second not first and you have to change gears before 2700 or it changes for you and you mist down shift such that the engine will be below 2700 or it wont change.

I dont agree however i dont recommend getting in the following conditions because its ugly.

It does help on straight ice snow not so much in my opinion.
