Top Cars to Buy Under $50k article

Gents -

Silly article mentions two Ferraris under $50k to buy today. We can all argue where in all creation is there a 355 for $35k and a carb 308 for $50k but that's a fight for another day. Passing along for fun.

They must be referring to the fiero and MR2 bodied look-a-likes.

Presumably an old article. Otherwise, their price data are way out of date. Anybody buying a $50k 355 in today's market (assuming you could even find one) is going to be looking at a lot of work.

 

Panteras go for way more, must be old

 

Will the writer of the article find one for me at that price ?
Of course their price includes no accidents, maintenance history and recent major service ..... Right

Not only would they be "automotive illiterates", they would also have to be Magnum P.I illiterates to not know that:

1) Magnum drove a 308 GTS - Not a GTB.

2) It wasn't Magnum's Ferrari, it belonged Robin Masters - Magnum only borrowed it.

As for the prices: Way off! :roll eyes:

1. 355 if you can find one. Maybe a spider. I think that ship has sailed.

3. Porsche 993
4. Porsche 964
5. Porsche 911(pre 89).
6. Bmw M Coupe(S54 or S52)
7. Bmw M Roadster(S54 or S52)
8. Porsche 928(gts if you can)
9. Bmw 3.0CSi
10. Mercedes Benz 560sl(86-89)
Aston Martin is another consideration.
It's too late for the 308-328.
I've never been a fan of Lotus.
Panteras go for more nowadays. It's one of my childhood supercars. Our neighbor had a black Pantera with white interior when I was a kid in Turkey. When I was 15 i got my first car which was a orange 1980 golf gti I always wanted to race that guy but it never happened. Now I know why
I do miss that golf gti. Add that to my list.

 

How old is this article? A F355 for 35k. You can still buy earlier Pantera's for 50K, they might need some work, but nowadays you probably won't being picking up any GT5's or GT5-S's like the one pictured for that price. Do the writers do any research before printing this stuff.

I saw a nice F355/Fiero for sale on Ebay recently. Probably could purchase that car really cheap.

 

As to all the questions on how "old" the article is, it was just published last week...which is why I was aghast at how off the pricing was. Shoddy journalism, in my view.

Not trying to start an argument but just because it was published last week doesn't automatically mean that it was written last week.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that they have simply re-published an old article and have been too lazy to change the prices.

(Either way it is shoddy journalism! )

 

They must get their data the same place the Ferrari Market Letter does. The FML says my
carb 308GTS is going for $39K.

 

Prices of every European sports car have been on a vertical trajectory, so hard to believe any decent cars would be attainable at the prices in the article.

I suspect prices are due for a major correction.

Other than salvage titled cars, I don't recall 355s getting down anywhere near $35k even during the trough of the recession.

I did pick up my three pedal spider in 2012 for $47k with 23k on the clock (April 2012), but as others have said, that ship has probably sailed. I am thinking of taking mine further away from stock than initially planned, so in a way, I am glad I didn't spend more on it.

Now hopefully I don't screw it up too much along the way.

 

I think I saw a couple here and there, definitely not the average, but that was quite awhile ago.

 

But at that price, you also inherited a bunch of problems....

 

Yes, had I been smarter, I could have had a much better deal in the low 50's. The problems just build character.

Most 355 that sold or are for sale for under 50G are probably salvage title or long story cars. You can find that in any brand even Porsche 911's air cooled which are very much in demand now a days.

 

The author is living in the past. He has to get back to the future...

And with that GTB, he would have reached 88 mph a lot quicker than with the overweight and underpowered DeLorean...

 

Strangely enough, mine was neither storied or salvage. Although, it did lack a clear history of maintenance, and I don't know that my stewardship will improve it's value to anyone but myself.
