    I have a '78 400 and the steering effort is phenomenally light. 'Normal' steering effort should be fairly high at parking speeds although definitely light at speed.
    This car shares the pump and steering box with the 365 GTC/4 so I've snuck into this forum to ask if someone knows what adjusts the pressure or steering effort in the power steering system. One theory holds that there's a restrictor in the supply hose from pump to box that may be missing. Another suggests that debris is in the pump where there is a pressure relief/ control valve.
    Does anyone here know what's inside? I've never seen a schematic of either the pump or box.
    Thanks

    Never heard of it.
    My C/4 was "twitchy" at freeway speeds...... so much co that I had the front end aligned by 2 different shops over a 2 year period. Tires were new and the car ran on Crommadora alloys (never did like the wires). The car also had an completely rebuilt suspension. If you paid attention while driving it was fine, but it did seem to oversteer a bit.

    To recap;
    New hoses & fluid
    Disassembled & cleaned check valve in pump
    Rebuilt steering box
    New ball joints
    correct tire pressure and front end alignment

    Steering effort is still 1-finger light at all engine speeds. Vey frustrating.

    Zanny1- my c4 is solid at high speeds, no twiching at all. My acura mdx was twitchy. The c4 is the same as my 308 at higher speed- (c4 roars to higher speed- at cruising high speed c4 is effortless, 308 effortless minus1)

    On the power steering-
    The power steering on the c4 is effective at very low speed, at driving speed it is very efficient, in that you still have some road feed back. The faster you go, the less steering assist is felt.

    Never drove a 400

    I've had 3 - 308's.... a '77, '81 and '84. They all were less 'twitchy' than my C/4. Perhaps the alignment was bogus, as the shop that worked on the car charged me for many things that I learned later weren't done.
    Anyway, the car is now sold and in Germany. last I heard.
