BMW uses this technique in Spartanburg and I like it. But it can be hard to hear the radios at times...my only criticism of it.

Yup - I've seen them on the youtube vids...they had them on the formula cars also. This is no longer offered as a charged option though to my knowledge.

Transponder on the car is AMB with no data.

My point remains, I don't know of any HPDE instructors using telemetry. I use AiM Solos for my advanced students at Apex Driving Academy, but it's not telemetry.

As should now be obvious it's one of my many peeves when people call data acquisition "telemetry." Big difference since with telemetry and 2-way radio you can do real-time coaching, not just debriefing.

trackmaster has some limited telemetry - it sends speed and gps position real-time to the net which can be accessed and watched via web browser. Not sure if you can get other data real-time as well, but it would be nice. It may depend on bandwidth. It does allow for background use, so you could set up a webcast via livestream or similar and watch the video and data together, thought I'm not sure how in-sync they would be - and it would require a good cell signal which not all tracks have.

Keith, already been pointed out that telemetry is "remote monitoring of acquired data." We all know that people not familiar with this technology mistakenly refer to data acquisition as "telemetry" when there is, in fact, no "wireless transmission real-time" but just recording of what is going on in the car for later review.

    See above.

See above. The Solo DL's are fantastic tools, for $699 they cannot be beat, especially if you add a $999 SmartyCam HD to them. A simple, two-piece completely portable data and video logging system, but NOT "telemetry."

I can say that MoTeC's optional RaceGrade TELEMETRY RADIOS are fast enough to do live coaching, but we're trying to keep it reasonable, right? ;)

Bob, the latency (delay) of going through cell packets, then up to a server, then downloaded, then visualized, makes it unsuitable for real-time coaching. Same with Race Capture Pro, although that is getting better.

For video, I use FaceTime video (if folks have unlimited data plans and the track has goode enough coverage), but still too much latency to do real-time.

I see telemetry as a way to improve an already competent driver. I don't see how that will help a newbie get safely around the track.

surprised no one has picked follow the leader as a method. that's usually the way car companies demo their new cars on track. ive done it with amg, srt, nismo, and more without trouble.

one of the groups I instruct for uses it occasionally when don't have enough instructors. they have a lead car and put few instructors in some of the student cars that follow along. works ok

Getting back to the OP's question, it's only been in the last twenty years that people REALLY got a hard on for making SURE there was a right-seat instructor in the car.

Before that (and still, in some groups), the culture, the attitude, the policies and procedures all allow folks to drive responsibly on their own, in graduated levels and in progressively more relaxed (in restrictions) run groups.

This is a thinking person's game. Drivers need to accumulate experience in graduated, measured, sensible ways and think about concepts too complex to grapple with in the car. Much learning occurs in the instructor (in car and out of car) debrief between the driver and instructor, sometimes more than the simple prompts and cautions given in-car while on track.

I had two really good days at Chin VIR the last two days. A model of how it should be done, but not without incidents...

I hadn't voted. I picked it. It's one of the ways I've picked up the most speed IMO as well, although not in an HPDE setting - with BMW and Skip Barber.
