So I'm looking at yet another car being sold by a dealer with the "we don't have any service records" BS. So I look at the carfax and the car has been religiously serviced at two F dealerships. I mean really, you can't take 30 seconds to call the dealer and get them. How lazy can you be? If any car sellers / dealers are listening, Ferrari people *care* about the service history. Take 30 seconds, be proactive, and get the records. It's not hard! You want to make a few thousand bucks, do some work for it! I'm tired of being the one who has to do your job for you, and push on you to get them!

Very often, dealers won't turn them over. Privacy issues. What if the name and address were used to target the previous owner with a crime?

You can always remove the identifying information. But generally that's not the reason they don't have them / give them to you. It's because they are lazy. Every time I've pushed for them and tell them I won't see the car without it, they magically find them .. and they never even bother concealing the owner's information. The reason they or the owner need to call and get them at the previous dealer *is* because of privacy issues, which is totally understandable.

I did the same thing. Private sale, but the current owner didn't have the full service history. I took the carfax and looked at the cities it had been in and any shops that were mentioned and started calling around to any Ferrari dealers in those cities. By the end of the day with a little leg work I had the full service history since new and it actually raised the value of the car in my mind.

they have obligations to their clients. I tried this with mine. I had to get a mall part and I brought my car in with registration to prove ownership since I was already there. Dealer said "sorry. can't release info".
Nothing against dealer. Very nice, courteous, and professional people. However, policy is policy. Completely happy with their service.

And yet when I was looking for a car last year all it required was for the current owner to request a copy of the records from the dealer, even though he did not own the car at the time of service.

Different dealers have had different experiences. Every dealer I have been at treated records as the property of the client whose name is on them and I agree with that policy based on experience.

All I can say is if records are important to you sort that out prior to purchase. At that point you do have some pull.

if the dealer release info to current owner, more power to him but in my experience, not all dealers will do so. I don't believe this is a mark against dealer.

Methinks you're expecting a little too much from a commissioned car dealership sales guy.

Methinks you're right. Still, I'm going to force him to do the right thing and get the records. Like 430b says above it will probably increase the value of the car in my mind.

I received all my service records from different dealers. Most of them had the names redacted to protect the old owner.

In the UK the current keeper of the car can obtain the names and addresses of all former keepers from the DVLA (a government agency) for a small fee - it's all perfectly legal, and very useful: former keepers may be able to help you recover missing records, etc.

I spent several days tracking down records for my 355. I called probably 10 shops / dealers and all were willing to look for the records. The ones that had records sent them to me. The only thing I ran into was one dealer who was sold to another company and records were gone. It was funny calling one dealer who said they had nothing. I called the same dealer back and talked to another person who found records. You have to be very persistent.

My 2003 was serviced at the same dealer in South Florida (The Collection)for most of its life until I bought it 2 years ago and they will not give me the records. I was told it was policy.
