We now know that the unmodified Bianco/Bianco Countach Downdraft used in Miami Vice was an early car, as it was featured in the ninth episode of Miami Vice's second season titled "Bought and Paid For". This episode aired on November 29, 1985. Here is the car, running in the show on Florida plates (I'm not sure if these were real). Image Unavailable, Please Login
A couple of scenes - clearly an early car with first series engine bay hood, unmodified from factory. Where is it now? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I think this has been discussed before on this site, but not sure. I know it was on a couple of other forums. I know Tony I. even has a shrine in his garage with posters and units mounted in the wall. Preety cool. It seems that the USA 5000QV cars were outfitted with the Alpine 7273 as shown in Joe's photo. So far, I've confirmed with other owners through the years what is in their cars. Here are my findings: My 1986: 7273 Friend with an 88.5: 7273 Friend with an '87: 7273 Friend with an '86: 7273 Local Lamborghini dealer with an '87: 7273 I believe the USA 25th cars switched over to the 7909 (which has a CD). Funny thing, the 7909 was voted the best Automotive CD/Radio ever back in 2009. They fetch a pretty penny when ey come up for sale. The Euro cars had something different. I can't remember. According to the 5000QV parts manual, the unit was a 7128L. Attached is a close up of my 7273. Mike Image Unavailable, Please Login
My 1985 DD QV FLA12828 Imported by Steve Mcmillen 5/85 I purchased it in 1987 from the first owner "Electrolux" (through a dealer), who supplied it to the Michael Andretti team. I think they had 2 cars at the time, both with gold pinstripes. Car had 4,000 KM on it when I bought it and the clutch was close to gone. If anyone has any more info on my car I would love to hear it. Image Unavailable, Please Login
The part manual is definitely incorrect (no surprise). The 7128 is from a previous era. It was a unit launched in 1980 and you can see it in some LP400S S2, S3, and LP500S, as it was in production circa 1980 - 1983. You can see from the image an manual below that the unit is from an earlier generation. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The Countach Downdraft generally used the same 7273 unit (below). Of course there were exceptions, some opting for the 7909 CD alone, or, in some cases (such as the Mimran car and the Kaiser special-order cars) a combination of the 7273 and the 7909, plus equalizers etc. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thank you Kerim. Did you see American Pharoah today? WOW. And he broke the track record! Perhaps we shall never see another that great. 1st Grand Slam winner, and we got to see it live. How lucky we are.
Welcome! Please share more pics of your car. FWIW, the other car actually had silver pinstripes to match the wheel color, as did yours.
It appears the 1985 Countach Downdraft shared the 7148 with the earlier LP500S. Here is an early 1985 car, the very DD tested by Car & Driver magazine in late 1985. From 1986 onwards the works went with the 7273. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Alex I found the image I was looking for that underscores what I was saying - black with red interior, Swiss-registered GR.100.U, I wonder if Raymond knows this car? Image Unavailable, Please Login
This one works really well! Very elegant, even though I wouldn't have chosen the colour coded steering wheel. A bit restrained if compared to some other wild combinations!
this unit was also in my fother ex jalpa a S1 jalpa from 1983 (the one with urraco rear lights) so i can confirm still used at factory in 1983. i think you are correct on application of this on 5000S, Joe. i have only some doubts for the S2 and S3 cars as i believe at least some did not came with that
One of the better, and also the earliest, Countach vs Testarossa test I've seen! Both cars were owned by Jean-Pierre van rossem, who had the Onyx F1 team back in 1989. Later he had an early 25th and a dozen of other Ferrari's which were seized and sold by authorities in the nineties but no idea what happened with the DD. Ahhh - there's more to that story. Here's my old DD (oh I do miss it !!), the same story came with my car - the whole Electrolux / Andretti story. Mine was FLA12830, so 2 numbers away from yours.... no silver though (I had not heard the story about one with silver stripes / wheels). The pinstripes are a little hard to see in this shot, but they are prominent whe you see it in person. The original wheel had long since been replaced with Gotti's, I put originals back on it and corrected some goofy side marker light treatment that had been done. Jim Kaminsky had somewhere in his archive photos of my my old car way back in the 80's at some motorsports event, and I have a few old shots of it somewhere with the old wheels and marker lights on it. Joe I'd love to know what info you have or could dig up about these. -Steve Image Unavailable, Please Login
Emilio I agree with your observations, but for purposes of the topic of this thread, I simply wanted to point put that the 7128 was not used as original equipment in the Countach Downdraft, despite what the parts manual erroneously suggests. Actually, it simply wasn't updated,, as opposed to being a mistake. Research shows the the 1985 cars got the 7148, and the 1986/7/8 cars got the 7273.
