True. I recall seeing one in the late 90s at Foskers in the UK that under normal circumstances would have been a right off, but even back then was deemed valuable enough to save. The rebuild took about a year. At the end of the process, the car went straight to the FOC concours from the workshop but had to borrow some trim and other bits and pieces (eg harnesses) from Foskers own GTO to complete it. I recall being offered a car in those days for £90k... How times change!

Saw a beautiful 288 at HR Owen Ferrari in London, on Tuesday, next to an equally beautiful F40. I took pictures but will upload them later as I don't have great internet access right now...

    For now.

I think certain variants of the Countach will have similar values in the future.

Saw this at Alexander Palace on Saturday. It looked like it had just rolled off the production line - the interior was flawless and looked brand new.

This is a very interesting debate that I imagine there are two very different views, I to went to Alexander Palace and saw this car. Owning a 288 and F40 with original paint I think it is a shame to have a car fully repainted and re trimmed, especially when Ferrari paintwork from this period is impossible to replicate, With regard to re trimming I have the same view, however if the cars interior is so bad that there is no other choice then surely for ascetic point on view you would trimmed the whole interior to at least have continuity. Re trimming the seats and steering wheel only, make it look very odd, especially with high grain leathers.
I would interest to hear other peoples opinions and view please.

My Enzo, F50, F40, and 288 also have mostly original paint and I like to see the original factory imperfections like runs, drips, uneven thickness, swirls, etc. But I'm ok if some panels were repainted to offset significant rock damage like the front bumper and side sills. When that's done, I insist on matching the original texture (and color of course). That means stripping the original paint rather than sanding. I don't insist on making drips and runs.

Very few cars have 100% original paint and often it's impossible to detect repainted panels when they match original texture. It's very easy to detect when an entire car was repainted, especially if it's too smooth.

For interior surfaces, I have the same philosophy. It's ok to replace panels if you match original color and texture. On my F50, I recovered the dash to fix the rippling from age. You know it was done simply because they all do that with age. But it look much better and that's the way it came as new.

On my 288, I'm also recovering the rear sill to offset installed speaker damage. I have the original material and you can't tell it was recovered.

Likewise, the 288 leather seat bolsters are worn. I'll try resurfacing first. If that doesn't look like factory or is too soft, I'll redo just the bolsters with leather having the same color and texture. It's tedious, but can be done.

With this, all of my cars have (or will) achieve Platinum status at major events like Cavalino or the Ferrari Nationals. Judges don't deduct for rock chips or resurfaced panels. But they will deduct when it doesn't look factory original (e.g., wrong texture or age damage). Missing drips is also not a problem because that depends on the original painter and some cars don't have drips, especially in later models. But I haven't seen an F40 with no drips or overspray. F40s have the worst finish in my opinion. The 288 and F50 finish has far less drips. And the Enzo finish is nearly perfect, making matching repairs very easy.

In summary, repairs on exterior and interior panels are OK if they match original color and, most importantly, texture. If you don't repair, points will be deducted because it's doesn't look like how the car was delivered. You can get away with rock chips (also seen on factory deliveries), but if it's too bad a repaint is needed to prevent point deduction.

Finally, all of my cars are covered in plastic. That is a 1-2 point deduction, but it allows me to drive the cars with no more points deducted. That's a great compromise in my opinion.

Great write-up Bill, somehow I missed this! As the other posted mentioned, at some point a professional photo-shoot is a must.
