That black turbocharged QV Cab that was offered/sold in TX a couple of months back, non-running, is now being offered at auction in CA next week. When it was running it was overheating; then the clutch crapped out and it sat for some years; so other stuff probably gone bad as well. Anyone (other than the kid from TX who burned the clutch) know the car or the current seller?

Same seller had coupes up a few hours ago... Guess the black one with the cleaner history got snapped up sharpish.

I'm still after an '86 cab if anyone knows of one in decent nick available.

No...the black one got taken down. Ebay didn't like the terms or some such nonsense. I'll repost later today.

Actually, I was a seller. After my car was already committed to another person (current owner) I received several additional offers.

    But ultimately, I'm a die-hard Mondial fan (circa 1992).

Ever have one of those days? Looks like my black 88 also has a salvage title! The title was washed back in 1992. I bought both cars off this forum. My days of buying cars off this forum (or any forum) without a Carfax is over with. I assumed (wrongly) cars this old wouldn't have a history.

What's interesting is that the black '88 is super clean. The car was on the lift for an engine out major (to reseal the engine) at Karl's during his open house. Lots of people saw the bottom of this car and everyone commented on it's cleanliness. It looks beautiful and laser straight underneath. I have no idea what kind of incident would have resulted in a salvage title. Oh well...live and learn (to pay stupid tax $$)...lol

Bill, I'm inclined to believe that these cars are survivors. In other words, "salvaged" cars don't (and won't) mean very much at all. Yes, there may be some additional considerations regarding registration in some places, but sell it for what it is. If the car is a good/great example, then price accordingly. To me, recent maintenance records along with a PPI on a cared for car (ownership, not flip) is more important than a "sordid" history (which can add character, in my opinion).

Carfax will go back to 80/81 when vins all became 17 digits. Cars usually receive salvage status when a repair gets to a certain percentage of the cars value. If damage occurs when fairly new that can easily be reached due to the new of new replacements parts cost. A theft IIRC is an automatic salvage classification. Stolen one day and recoverd the next in the exact same condition will usually total the car.
With older cars like this its usually just an excuse for buyers to back out. Sure it usually means less $ for the sale and a smaller pool of buyers, but buyers are still out there. I guess the thing I'd be most PO about would be the previous sellers not mentioning the issue. IMO that's just down right unscrupulous if they knew at the time.
I'm looking for a cabriolet, but could be interested if the $ is right

There were two on CL recently, one in Huston and another somewhat in that area. CL requires a lot of background research but can certainly be legit

Just got an email on my ebay auction for the black Mondial rom the original owner! Looks like the car wasn't wrecked after all.

"Hi - I used to own this car (for 12 years) and know the history of the salvage title - I was stuck with this problem when I tried to sell it myself. Here is what happened - the car was repossessed from it's original owner (either in NY or NJ) and the original title was lost. The State (NY or NJ - I cannot remember) then issued a replacement title. CarFax, for some reason, claimed it was a salvage title. Neither NY or NJ keep their records more than 10 years so I was unable to get CarFax to remove the salvage title history - even though CarFax themselves could not actually produce a copy of the salvage title. I am the person who sold the car to the individual in Canada who you purchased the car from. The "service records" that you included in your listing are mine - I purchased the car on 9/3/1993 and mostly did my own work except for having the 15K service done by Independent Ferrari Service."

That's awesome Bill. A storied past beats boring any day.

Yours is a visual twin of the one I owned and, as you said, must be seen (and driven) to truly be appreciated.

The Kansas car was on my radar but not quite in the condition described, I believe.

I've seen that car on the classics salon last weekend. Even though they claim it's accident free, it has had a serious accident on the front side: lights do not line up against the hood and are even placed a bit higher. Bumper has been replaced also. Next to that, the paint comes off around the air intakes on the side. Personally, I wouldn't give more than 18.000 euro.

That red coupe that Beverly Hills Scrapyard has for sale is missing the header tank, air pump, air filter cover, wheel nuts and centers, and the body panels are not only rusty, the paint color does not match. They say same owner many years. I saw stored outdoors many years. Money pit.
