Ferrari re-opens door to supplying Red Bull with F1 engines

 

Finally somebody has come to their senses.

Would be a tragedy to loose RB over this.

It is clear from the link and the article this remains a slight possibility not the done deal you suggest

I think what Red Bull IS going to be doing is take Renault base engine and develop all their own ****.

Ferrari tries to save face somewhat by saying now that they would actually supplied if Red bull wanted...

That's all it comes down to I am sure, money. And a LOT of it.

 

True, but it doesn't sound like a great deal for Red Bull. It might keep them in business, but since they would only get Ferrari's 'old' engine it will probably be a case of exchanging one uncompetitive pu for another.

 

Depends on how much power Ferrari will find over the winter...I think the development steps might get smaller so on percentage the 2016 Ferrari engine might not be that far away from the 2015 as Ferrari is racing now...Maybe Red Bull can make this up with their aerodynamics...I guess we will see earliest in February (if it happens)

 

It will be fun if red bull have to sign to say they will move over if holding up the ferraris in a race, like toro rosso once did

 

I'm inclined to agree. Ferrari's offer isn't really anything new, it's still old engines that will be way down on power compared to Mercedes and Ferrari. We'll see how this plays out in the next couple of weeks. Whatever the outcome, it should be official at or before Abu Dhabi. Certainly, buying Renaults and tweaking them themselves is in keeping with Red Bull's independent streak.

 

If they get the end of year 2015 Ferrari engine it would not be a bad engine at all. Unless ferrari find 40+hp for 2016, I suspect Red Bull will about equal Ferrari.

 

I wouldn't mind it. They should try to sneak-in/agree to a prancing horse on the RedBull somewhere though : )

I also 100% agree with Marchionne. Jean Todt is an idiot.

Mercedes has since confirmed that at 20M Euro a season they actually declare a loss on each engine contract.

I wonder if any part of this is motivated by Ferrari going public. Might be a nice way to raise another chunk of revenue.

 

I think Ferrari is going to be within single-digit HP of the Merc next year. They already seem very close now to be honest. The Redbull chassis seems so good that they might be able to win a number of races next year even down quite a bit on HP IMHO. Hopefully that will be good enough for RB until a new engine spec is announced or another supplier becomes a viable/competitive option.

A 'terrible' headline at best. No matter, what really caught my eye;

What the hell has Bernie/FOM got to do with anything?...... Sure, he's bailed people out in the past, given advances on payouts etc, but AFAIK he hasn't been directly involved with teams or PU suppliers directly for a long time now.

I thought that red bull resolved their engine issue by working on building their own engine....

 

Just that one outlet posted that and none of the major sites have confirmed so people are assuming it is BS at this point.

When Renault and RB start at the same point with the latest joint-engine then it would be hilarious if the RB development would be ahead of the Renault one in near future. Because then RB would be right afterwards in saying that even they could do better than Renault did in the last years, this would be a huge disgrace for Renault...I do not see what Renault has to win with that...

 

They've agreed to talk. That's all that's happened.

RB knows it will never get "the same" engine that the Ferrari team gets.

BTW: I think the criticism of Ferrari for sticking with the agreed quota is BS. Look at McLaren and Honda. Mac said "no way" to letting anyone have the Honda engine. Sure, the engine stinks but where is the criticism of McLaren using it's veto?

 

Their willingness to supply 15 spec engines is old news
