Hi all I'm looking at buying a 355 Challenge but I'm wary about clones. The car is in japan currently. It's black with a burgundy coloured interior and the vin number is ZFFPR41JPN0104196, Is there other numbers I need to find? the car has the roll cage and rear wing and the correct wheels, fuel cut off etc but I have seen clones before so I'm wary

    Thanks
    Richard

No worries mate, there are two for sale in Australia at the moment. Both RHD.

Both owners are members of this forum. Both cars are red also and 100% genuine 355s with the CH kit fitted to them.

If you're interested, send me a PM and I will give you some info and pass on the details.

    Cheers Pap

The car is shown in my records as a challenge car conversion (Type B), but it has not been verified that it raced in the Japanese F355 Challenge series yet. Still working on verifying those serial numbers.

It has no tow hook in the rear bumper for example. It would have needed that to participate in the series. The front tow hook does not appear original. But lots generally happen to cars that raced, so see if you can find out the original driver name in the logbook or car's history. That will help.

    Let me know your findings.

Thanks very much Rob. So it should only be worth what a normal 355 would cost with similar mileage right? at least we can offer the appropriate money for her knowing this information.

    Hello buddy,

I don't think I understand your question exactly.

Would you like the details of the two 355 Challenge cars for sale in Australia?

Or details on the car Richard is looking at? I don't have any info on the black car sorry.

It is up to you on what you feel the car is worth. I would say in general, a car with all the challenge parts would be worth more than a regular F355 to most here on the board. But with verified racing history would take it to that next level of higher value.

This last statement may not be agreed upon by everyone here. Some prefer a proper car that has not been raced, or been involved in any bumping, contact, or race impacts... Neither thought is wrong and brings with it buyers that prefer both.

So up to you to gauge a value. I think this car has promise to be sought after in the future. You just need some history and that elusive driver name. I am working on completing the history for all the series to assist all owners with all the information.

    Robb

Chassis #104196 was raced in the Japanese Challenge series in 1996, driver Keiji Tanaka.

Starting with the fact that there weren't many RHD F355 Challenge cars built and that most of the remaining ones have had a pretty hard life over the past 20 years, a road registered RHD F355 Challenge car in good condition is extremely rare. The value would be significantly more than a standard F355 Coupe.

so this was 100% raced? thanks for the detailed information it's amazing how you guys find this stuff out. It's LHD by the way which is most common in Japan on exotics

Japanese market for 355's has caught up quick over the past few months. I hope you win the auction but be prepared to pay close to US prices...it looks to be a very nice example.

I'm not sure what you mean by 100% raced ? - the car was entered and raced at least in the 1996 Ferrari Challenge Series in Japan, not sure about other years.
Because it has the wing fitted it implies it has the update kit fitted so it may have been raced in later years ( 1997 -1999 as well.

But its not unheard of for Challenge cars to have been used for only one season - plenty of reasons: owners get interested in something else, they don't have time, the racing is not what they expected, 1997 Asian financial crisis, whatever..
