GP2 race much better than F1 race

The ABU DHABI GP2 race was more exiting to watch than the boring F1 race. Plenty of action and passing. Pitt stops were quick enough with less men over the wall.

 

I didn't catch the race, but that doesn't surprise me.

The cars are more attractive also IMHO - just as is the case with Indy Lights vs Indy as well.

 

It's hardly surprising that the racing in GP2 is closer and more exciting than in F1 - GP2 is a one make series and so the cars are pretty much identical to one another! That means the racing is more down to driver skill than having the right car!

If every car in F1 were made by just one manufacturer, to the same standard, then F1 racing would instantly become closer and more exciting.

It's not hard to see how really is it? Think about it: Hamilton/Vettel/Alonso/Rosberg/Button/Verstappen/Perez/Hulkenberg/Kimi etc., etc., etc., all in the same make of car and none with a car advantage/disadvantage compared to their rivals. The competition for the WDC would be superb!

Obviously this is not what F1 is about though and so the only way the FIA can try to make the cars as close to being identical as possible is by the constant tweaking of the regulations (But that just seems to p:censored:ss everyone off on here!).

This is how fickle the F1 fans are: They moan and b:censored:h that the races are boring but God help the FIA if they try to adjust the regulations to try and bring the teams performances closer together! - Suddenly the FIA are accused of meddling with F1, and demands are made that the teams should be free to do whatever they want. Come the next race though it's back to Mercedes dominance once again and statements proclaiming: "Most boring race ever!".

It's a case of: "Damned if you do - Damned if you don't!" for the FIA!

Added to that, GP2 drivers are far more likely to attempt overtakes in unlikely places than F1 drivers do because their youth makes them far more gung-ho about trying it and they tend to think that they have to win ever lap.

Look at Max Verstappen: He's brought a GP2 mentality to F1 and is giving it a go at overtaking in some quite unusual places (for F1!), which is fabulous to see, but by the same token, he's only 4 points away from getting a one race ban because of the number of times he doesn't pull the overtake off and then has some sort of incident.

Also, fixing damage on a GP2 is comparatively inexpensive due to to all of the common parts shared between all of the cars on track.

An F1 car on the other hand is far more bespoke than a GP2 car and so any damage caused by over-exuberant driving and wild overtakes is going to cost a lot more to put right, which can also play on an F1 drivers mind (especially the younger, less experienced drivers as it could cost them their F1 career if they keep smashing the car up).

 

So in other words, you agree with the OP but don't like him comparing the racing because the rules of F1 and GP2 are too different?

He didn't say that F1 should be more like GP2...he said the racing was better.

 

And the OP's point is? What's next? Riding my Ducati this weekend was more exciting than F1?
MotoGP is also a lot more exciting than F1. We have MotoGP and GP2 forums for that.

If you find the sport boring then shut off the TV or switch channels.

 

First off, if the OP wants to talk about GP2 then he should post it in the correct section: Other Racing - FerrariChat.com

However, If he wants to do a comparison with F1 then it's only fair to point out the major differences between the two different race series and point out why they are not alike.

The comparison being made in the original post.......:

...........carries with it an implication that F1 should follow the example of GP2 in order to become more exciting.

I've merely pointed out that with the structure and principles of F1, that is never going to happen as the series are nothing alike.

Based on your interpretation of the OP's post though, it's the equivalent of someone posting in the F1 section: "I prefer MotoGP to F1!

Had that been what the OP was implying then My response would have been a simple: "So what?"

 

(Me the original OP), It was wishful dreaming that F1 would be more exiting! My self, I have been following F1 since 1965. It is now the only form of racing I still watch and love. I know F1 is an engineering exercise. I guess I just can't grasp new things. F1 will never be like it was in the past. I just except what it is.

It's true that GP2 is more exiting than F1.

F1 is now too much an engineers' formula, where GP2 is still a drivers formula.

I wish GP2 was becoming a series on its own, and nor live in the shadow of F1.
What stops GP2 to become a full-blown series is that it is owned by Bernie Ecclestone, and considered by him to be a step-up to F1.

I also wish that GP2 has a fuller calendar with more races on different continents.

Why not revive the Temporada in Argentina for GP2, or the Tasman series, or the French Trophies?

 

A far cry from GP2 cars, but F4 will have a global championship in 2017. Might be worth checking out. The cars have minimal aero and should be close to spec, so could be really interesting. Low cost (for racing) also, so there should be great talent. I'm waiting to see who ends up in the cars in the US to see if that is an accurate prediction.

I think it carries the implication that F1 should be more exiciting; not that it should be more like the formula of GP2.

...and that's fine, but I don't think you need to crucify the guy. It's a valid point of discussion.

 

F4 is fine, I am sure, but it's too underpowered for me.

GP2 is really like F3000 was before, and F1 in the late 60s.

There are 2 races per event, which I think is a good idea.

 

Yah I can see that...they aren't that fast relatively speaking.

 

There was a relatively cheap formula years ago, using stock block 5000cc engines, called Formula A in the States and Formula 5000 in Europe.

Power wasn't too different from F1 of the time (aroung 450/500hp), but the cars were slightly heavier. Many cars used F1 chassis.

I think some F1 races not counting for the championship accepted F5000/F A cars.
