I think your numbers are a little off.

Just the engine is going to run you that "20 or 30" more. JUST the engine.

Honestly if they paid you $10,000 to flatbed it away, I would worry about breaking even to do it right.

 

Obviously it isn't an 80. In fact it is more 78 than it is a 79.

It is a 78. Its chassis number falls squarely into 78 territory in the registry. The 80 comes from the year it was first registered in the US. My 77 is registered as a 78 for the same reason, as it was first registered in the US in late 1978.

 

That was my guess, although I am a little surprised a brand new 78 GTB took two years to find a forever home back in the day.

 

It may have been the same person who drove it around Switzerland (my guess due to dual exhaust without single left side cutout) a year or two then brought it home. Who knows.

 

Lots of negative indicators too. But likely not really a basket case, as it is still together and not in baskets!

Single dizzy is really strange with the short stubby grey cap that is different than the slightly taller black Magneti Marelli cap that belongs there. This may be a conversion to use a US cap.

Rattle can paint job on whole car front to back...check out fans up front and rear wheel well liners. As well as the whole rear wing closeup of the right rear window revealing red over rust.

As mentioned previously, no radiator overflow tank. No big deal.

It is missing the plastic air duct from right intake to air filter housing (not just the rubber). Mine is off my car in San Diego if the eventual buyer wants to go splash a copy of an original.

I'm really glad you are all looking at it though. I just love these cars and many of you may know it took me over two years to find mine to restore. I wanted to make sure that anyone looking for a euro carb GTB could at least consider this one. It will be cool no matter what. And for what it's worth, it almost certainly won't be financially smart in the short term, but when you look at it as automotive philanthropy, you'll be saving another really cool Ferrari. I really applaud that. Besides, hang on to it and enjoy it long enough and it might all turn out fine finacially too, if that matters at all.

Nobody knows how in depth you'd need to get with the engine - be it a $20k nut and bolt rebuild or perhaps needing only valves/heads and a through going through for half that. A proper paint job including bodywork would probably cost another $20k. The leather could be redone for $6k, although I agree with Tex that the interior looks serviceable and would be worth cleaning up to keep original. So you'd be in a dry sump GTB for worst case scenario of $46k refurb costs (call it $50k with misc). Factoring a purchase price of $34k for a total of $84k and I don't think you'd be upside down in today's market. You may even still have some decent upside if you were exporting it.

 

I am in a predicting mood. I predict this car hammers for over $45K or gets pulled last minute.

I also think everything costs two to three times what we think it does, unless you do it yourself. You won't be able to have anyone turn this into a car anywhere as nice as Bigodino's 78 dry sump that is for sale in Europe for less than it would cost to just buy his car and ship it back here. I really believe if you do realistic math on this, there is no way to come out on top in the short term. Yes, a really, really well restored car might fetch $150K plus. But the details to get it to that level will cost more than $150K, and that's after purchasing the car. You have to really want to do this to make it make sense.

 

I suspect your price prediction is accurate.

Regarding the costs of refurb - my numbers are taken directly from what I have paid in the last year for restoration of an earlier car I received in similar condition to this one. I went a highly detailed route that included complete mechanics freshening (disassembled, new clutch, valves, and many other parts), complete interior (all surfaces, seals, and carpet), complete suspension refub (all new components, bushings, and proper finishes), and a glass out bare metal respray. I didn't do any of the work myself and I don't have anywhere near $150k in a very nicely restored car. Managed properly, these jobs are doable.

This car has lots of potential he current market value for a 78 dry sump Euro GTB is certainly north of $100 with room to spare. We currently are restoring a 76 Vetro and a minor restore on a 76 US GTB. Would love to get this one in line as well

If you bought it, it may not be a crazy investment - you don't have to hire someone to fix it like we do .

These cars are best bought by folks like you, not some new-to-Ferrari guy looking to save a buck by picking up a "priced right fixer upper 308"

 

I would like to see the car saved so good luck to buyer and seller. The rust and bondo filled bodywork look scary.

I agree it's a mid year 1978 at the latest.......

 

As we have seen in Newman's famous threads...the Russian steel leaves a lot to be desired.
So, "rust lurks" in all of them...this one simply shows it (in the usual spots)

Still I have been hanging out with hot rod guys, and the cost to fix this body properly and repaint (glass in) I would put below $10K..

TRutlands does a short block for $12K??

Seats and carpet (the rubber and anodizing looks pretty good in pictures.

He meant a cap from a US car. Its a Marelli cap. It is just chalky from exposure to the elements.

 

I don't think you dropping over will make any difference. I asked him what he needs to end the auction, and he said he wants to let it run. I bid the current 35k and was outbid instantly so I think this one will set the new "project" benchmark. Since he couldn't confirm there isn't a hole in the block, I don't feel comfortable with any more. Someone is in for a surprise - either really good, or, really bad.

 

Yes, I meant possibly a 8 post cap from a US car. As Rifledriver stated it looks kind of like a Marelli cap but not quite like any I've seen before. The shape is slightly stubbier and the spots where the bolts go through are thicker than on mine. Pics below. Probably just a different or aftermarket version. I still think it's grey, sorry.

A block of course would be really bad news but this looks like a "first timer" belt change......

 

don't be afraid of a block, I have one if needed. This would be a great project, a little too much for the do it yourselfer but for a quality resto shop this would be an ideal job.

I think the body holds significant surprises. Those are not just rust bubbles, but rust bubbles emerging through heavy layers of bondo. The left side of the car is so laden with bondo that the front dog leg, door and rear quarter panels don't even align with the sill. Bondo looks 1/2" or more thick.

You can see the Macco paintwork all over the car, so the "quality" of past bodywork in the past was sloppy no doubt. It definitely needs to be completely stripped and addressed by an experienced body man. I would assume anyone buying this car would have gone that route anyhow, so no big deal. Fortunately all the metal is available at very reasonable prices.
