That makes perfect sense, it would explain the odd bidding cadence. The telephone bidder always adds a bit of mystery and intrigue.
I think that RM should be commended on the catalog and presentation; particularly on the pace of the sale given the Chinese water torture of the Keno sale.

The no sales for the most part looked like market correct bids. I doubt RM will lose much sleep over it given the number of successful big sales.

I was thinking somewhere else in the city (midtown or downtown), but I've lived here long enough to appreciate and support your perspective! ;)

The presumably real underbidders were still market correct, no?

Impossible to know whether there were real underbidders or not; and if there were where did they stop bidding? A sales associate talking to a phone bidder might be ordering pizza for all we know.

Do you happen to know the high bid (with the usual disclaimer that it may not have been a real bid)?

Thanks. I was there but stepped out when the gullwing was up because the car I was interested in was later in the order...

Very interesting ,,but not documented enough with no race entry form or scrutineering document showing this chassis number in Tour de France or any other races..nor factory confirming that indeed this car was driven by Moss who was 2 seasons before the MB top WORKS driver..while some of the specs of this car are either unique or rarely found on very few ( raced) GW cars, we have already seen another Moss driven car ( the UK press car, seemingly presented as used for MM training...) not selling at a different previous auction for similar reason ( could not demonstrate it was indeed used for MM recce. )

I guess, may be unlike for F Cars, at this level of price , potential buyer want to connect all dots and not take for granted the statement of the catalogue, unless supported by written proof.

An incredible Vignale creation.. a crown jewel.
Restoration by Heinrich Kaempfer.. a true labor of love.
Well bought in the context of today's prices.

And high bid was $3,200,000 so bid to just under the selling price. The car has been shown extensively so probably not much concours glory for the new owner. Who cares? A magnificent car.
