Question to the professionals from a commercial passenger. According to reports, an A350 automatically aborted takeoff at JFK due to the "plane" thinking the runway was to short for takeoff. My two questions are: Since the "plane" seems to be incorrect, regarding the length of the runway, how did it know that it had enough runway left to negotiate the emergency stop, and not end up running off the end? Also, I am beginning to question the amount of automation that is being built into commercial airliners. Makes one wonder just what the pilots are left to do. Any concerns here? Or is it possible the "plane" was correct based on the pilots entering incorrect data to the systems, or inadequate thrust? Maybe we don't actually know the truth of what occurred with this event. I am now also developing these same concerns towards our automobiles (lane change warning, auto cruise, auto braking, etc.). Seems this is only going to add to the incompetent drivers on the road.

Conflicting reports. One says the crew initiated an abort and the other said the aircraft initiated an abort. How does the aircraft know how long the runway is? Crew entered or GPS?

"In an other company flying a RAAS (Runway Awareness and Advisory System) equipped airplane out of JFK, they have an internal note that instructs the crew on disabling the RAAS specifically on runway 04L/22R because the database does not have the correct (read: full) length available for departure on this runway"/
