Sadly I must let the community know some news. We support a Boys and Girls Club in Delaware every year at Christmas. Through funds raised at the Greenville car show we raise money for this club.Well sadly Vandals go onto the roof of the building and tore apart the HVAC system for the scrap value of the copper etc. This club operates on a deficit every year. It barely has the money to keep operating. That's why I chose this club to support eight years ago. Now they may have to close almostly certainly temporarily but possibly permanently. Just sickening. People in the neighborhood stealing from one of the few bright spots in their own neighborhood. Just a frickin mess. Jon in Delaware

Is it possible that this kind of loss is covered by insurance?

Yes Jerry, Its possible. They are in touch with the Insurance company and an HVAC company who is willing to donate some labor and such. At a minimum there is the deductible and then the cost of some kind of secure fencing around the rooftop to avoid this from happening again. My HVAC contact says it happens every day. I have never experienced this kind of thing.

Wilmington Boys & Girls Club may close following vandalism

How big of a unit was it that they can just go in and remove it from the roof?

Ok. What can we do? Can we pool some funds and buy them some sort of temporary portable heating to get them through the winter? There has to be something we can do as a community to help these kids?

    This is just awful

What they took/destroyed was 4 industrial units so I'm not sure that temporary units would do the job. According to the article, they are covered by insurance but the claim might take a while to process and there is some kind of deductible that they will have to pay. That said, Jon has been in touch with the Boys and Girls Club and I'm sure will keep us updated as to what we can do to help. Seems that more than a few of us are willing to assist whether it's donations, acquiring resources, etc...

The Club has a great story to tell about its value to Wilmington's neediest children, and to the community at large. Therefore, it seems like a good opportunity for a corporate benefactor.....is there a development office/fundraising office at the Club that can identify prospective donors?

It's not my local, but I'd assist… just make sure someone does their due diligence as to who owns building so as to not unjustly enrich owner versus kids, check insurance, check lease, look into inside job, etc. Not my first rodeo so gun shy as to quick help, that's all. This is not quick solution/emergency… we need to think long-term to keep project solvent and running. Any push to rush should be looked at with extra scrutiny.

After you posted the news on FB, and then I also saw the story on Channel 10 news. What is wrong with people? And of course, nobody saw nuttin'.....

Please keep us posted, and I hope we as supporters are ultimately able to help in some way.

Boys and Girls Club of Delaware owns the building and property in question. So any replacement of the equipment would not benefit a third party as opposed to the Club.

What is taken from these units is the coils. If they are gas heat it is possible that they could still be used for heat. Right now scrap prices are down. When the prices are high this becomes even more of a problem

Hi everybody. Sorry for my being out of touch on the topic but Christmas got in the way. I am in touch with a terrific guy who is part of the car community who owns an HVAC company. He has offered to go to the facility Monday to evaluate the needs. I'm in touch with the president of the Delaware boys and Girls clubs statewide. Pending an insurance evaluation. We seem to have two primary issues. One is timely replacement of the equipment to avoid disruption of services. Two is the deductible cost and therefore fund raising and cost of a security solution to avoid a repeat performance from the scum bags who perpetrated the theft. As soon as I know more details I will reach out to the community. Thankyou for all your support. Respectfully jon

Hi everyone Happy New Year. In an effort to begin to raise money for this unfortunate and unnecessary situation a "Go Fund Me" account has been established. Please consider a donation to help rebuild this club that we have spent eight years now supporting. Thank you. Respectfully Jon

And for those that are local to Wilmington if you would prefer there is a fundraiser at Tims Famous Bar and Grill in Wilmington this Thursday January 7th at 5:30. 100% of the money raised on Thursday will go to defray the cost of the Deductible, the Depreciation discount the insurance company is going to pay in their claim payment of the stolen equipment which worked just fine until it was stolen and the cost of security fencing to prevent this from happening again. Again thanks for your support!

That's very nice of you. I haven't a clue. I will ask. Do you have a connection to a manufacture of equipment?
