Yep, which is why I said it looks painful and would take a week to do. Lol Still interesting why they went down that track. Would be good to know why. Actually, they have to make money in the service departments somehow eh? Might start seeing more solid valve train Ferraris in future with "reliability" being the reason behind the change. These cars don't have cam belts and the clutches/gearboxes are 'sealed for life'. So no more expensive major services at the dealers or independents anymore. Just basic fluids, filters and spark plugs.
The car has 29 K on it about 18thouand Miles which is about where most 456Ms have the work done. Diagnosing Valve guides isnt really something then can be found using the compression as a guide. identifying brurnt valves is . Personally I liked his explanation of watching the pressure build and it makes logival sence give that the valve may not seat effetly evey time hence the slower rate of pressur buildup. The old school classic was smoke when backing off going down hill or at closed throttle after idleing for a period. Very rare to see these days.
Key board duly Booked i!!!n its a blue tooth logitech to an ipad and there is no spell check unless you see it first, illogitech may be.
I have to hand mine back next week when I retire, the so and so's wont let me keep it. I will miss its portability, not the spelling. Just have to buy my own, Ispose ( thats not a spelling mistake I made it up)
Mitsi Magnas are usually a sure thing for blowing smoke after they've been idling at the lights, but that's about it with modern cars.
Just came across this in the 550/575 section. Leak down and compression test numbers from a 575 a forum member is looking at buying. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/456-550-575-sponsored-bradan/505951-550-compression-leak-down-numbers.html
Yep, Brother and I own a 1998 V6 Magna that has smoked the town out over the last 12 years. He used to drive it work, but retired it a few months ago and bought a Hilux. Car was an ex-taxi and has 550,000 km on it total. That engine had around 200,000 km on the clock before it would start smoking. We were going to give away to the local black folk to take it to the NT, but he has now changed his mind and he and his young fella are going to enter it into a demolition derby next year. So it's sitting at the old mans place waiting to be smashed up. We put a new a/c evap in last year, so at least he will ice cold air when he is in the derby.
Early 90's Pajeros. So common mechanics worked out how to replace the guides without taking the heads off.
Interesting following commentary, I would rather a compression check just ensure there was "balanced" engine. Leak down checks of greater than 10% as far as I know not good but as long as there are equal compressions then each cylinder is doing its bit to produce a smooth engine. As a followup to my valve guides they are made of a CHE specked blend of phosphours bronze.
FFS, don't you think I know that? Difference between the two was that a Pajero was worth fixing because it was a big 4WD. Magna throw away proposition. Have you bought that Mondial yet?
Paj's aren't worth fixing if they've the 24 valve engine in 'em. Re the Mondial,I'll let you know after the weekend.
In fairness I am talking quite a few years ago. Get KIAI to buy the Mondial for you; he always gets in before the bubble.
Yesterday was magic day, valve guides sorted, 575 engine mounts fitted, fuel pump mounts changed, A/C regassed, rear spheres changed, a new alternator and battery and looking resplendent with a freshly repaired and painted frount bumper, my 456M is finally home. It was like picking up the car for the very first time, and was just as nervous. How wonderful are these V12s the flexibility in traffic is amazing and relaxing. The freeway performance is another world and for me the engine does seem smoother and quieter. And to top it off today is my birthday!
